KFC SUED BY CHICKEN FRIED STEAK CONSORTIUM

March 12 2008

Louisville, KY – In response to the controversial decision by Kentucky Fried Chicken last month to call for a ban on chicken fried steak, a small consortium of CFS enthusiasts have filed a lawsuit against the fast food giant. (original article can be read here).

It was last February 16 that the Louisville giant made the controversial claim against the southern delicacy, stating in part that as it contained no actual chicken, the name was false advertising. This created a hue and cry amongst enthusiasts of the dish. Some criticized the company of the exact same tactics, focusing in particular on their sale of “Popcorn Chicken” which of course contains no popcorn, and some snidely claimed no chicken either.

“Simply put, corporate giants like this can’t go around stepping on anyone they see fit,” said the lead lawyer for the group, Dwight Henslough. “This is the United States of America. People are free to do and say what they want. This isn’t about chicken fried steak; this is about a corporate giant trying to tell people what they can and cannot do with their lives. This type of corporate bullying has to end.”

Some in the consortium are not motivated by such loft concerns. Daryl Hamble, owner of Hamble’s Diner in the Louisville area has seen his business drop off precipitously since the announcement.

“Some of my regulars are coming more often. Eating chicken fried steak three times a day, but we’ve lost a lot of the casual customers. This is my livelihood. This is how I support my family. I can’t just sit back and let them ruin me. We have to fight.”

Southern Treats, another local diner, has seen much more malicious tactics. kfc logo

“My meat delivery truck has carjacked the other day so we had no steak. People have been throwing pieces of chicken at our windows as they drive by. We even had one guy come in with a KFC bucket on his head and start harassing my customers. They are trying to drive me out of business. This is un-American,” said the owner Dwayne Heck.

“My clients are suffering. They just don’t seem to understand the human toll this is taking. We cannot stand idly by and allow corporations to take over all our traditions and food. As citizens, we need to put our foot down now.”

Neither KFC nor Yum! Brands had any comment regarding the suit. The case is expected to go before courts early next month.
