DRUDGE GETS NEW HAT, WEBSITE STILL LOOKS THE SAME

July 11, 2008

Miami, FL – Matt Drudge is without question one of the most important web pioneers. His simple yet controversial website, which began life as email service in 1994, has been truly ground breaking. Amongst other things, the site helped bring readers to this new thing called the World Wide Web; launched the careers of important web personalities such as Harry Knowles of Ain’t  it Cool News and Andrew Breitbart of Breitbart.com; laid the groundwork for both blogging and aggregation sites such as Digg; and perhaps most importantly has set the traditional news publishing set on the defensive, changing news forever. Without the Drudge Report, the web would be a much different place today.

Drudge still the sameOf all the things this web pioneer has revolutionized the one thing that has remained untouched is his look. That traditional fedora, a style harkening back to the newsrooms of the 1930’s, has remained a fixture of his public persona. Much like the layout and design of his site, the fedora has barely moved since coming to public view, until now.

Recent reports from the Miami area indicate that Drudge has scuttled the trademark fedora in favour of a flat black bowler. Several people have also reported seeing him sporting a cane and/or an umbrella.
“I did a double take, but it was definitely him,” said a local paparazzi. “It looks like he’s going for this distinguished Englishmen look for whatever reason.” The photog didn’t manage to get any snaps of the web pioneer in his new get up.

“He may be an important person on the internet, but he’s not going to be style icon anytime soon,” said Scrape TV Fashion analyst Fiona Dollak. “I cannot imagine a time when bowler hats or the English gentleman look is going to come back into fashion. He can try if he wants, but very few people are going to be looking to a news website for fashion tips.”matt drudge smiling

So far though, this apparent change in Matt Drudge’s personal look has not translated into any changes in the look of his site, which with only a few minor alterations, looks that same since it was launched in 1997 (see what it looked like back then, and now). That simple layout and seeming disinterest in taking on modern website affectations hasn’t done anything to hinder the sites popularity, but does this change in personal appearance indicate that changes might be on the horizon?

“Unlikely. Drudge knows that he’s got a good thing going and there isn’t much point changing what’s working,” said web analyst Gavin Gaynor. “Eight year olds build more sophisticated sites nowadays, but the one thing Drudge proves every day is that looks aren’t everything.”
