BP GETTING SICK OF OIL SPILL BRIEFINGS
May 31 2010
London, U.K. – There are environmental disasters and then there are environmental disasters. Many incidents of environmental damage are small and isolated but some – such as the Chernobyl meltdown or the Bhopal leak – that bring nightmares and the
spectre of what damage our actions and inactions can cause. Such a situation appears to be the case in Gulf of Mexico where British Petroleum has failed yet again in its effort to stem the flow of oil pouring into the ocean. With the economic impacts already being felt many are concerned that this could very well be one of the worst disasters in history.
Of course there are people who are more concerned than others. Local businessmen and fishers along the Louisiana coast are most certainly concerned. Tourist facilities throughout Florida are at panic level over the mass cancellations. Environmental activists are in a fit as more and more animals wash up on shore. Even the President is deeply concerned, seeing one more problem that he is unable to fix further threatening his leadership. The people at the centre of the mess, however, BP seem a little less worried about the whole mess and after their latest attempt to plug the hole failed. Now they have new plans to stop the flow, which many people including the company itself are sceptical about, but have apparently little passion about the whole thing one way or the other.
“Yeah the top kill failed and we have this new thing that we are going to try and hopefully that will work but we won’t know until we try I guess. The new thing is this machine thingy. We’ll go down and cut off some metal pipe and then put this thing on,” said a spokesperson for the company. “I mean that’s the plan but it’s going to be hard and there’s a pretty good chance that it won’t work so I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. We know everyone is getting sick of this thing and so are we but we are all kind of stuck here for now.”
The ultimate solution appears to be a relief well which won’t be drilled until at least August as the crews capable of doing the work are currently on vacation.
“People are getting down on BP and quite rightly so but they didn’t do this on
purpose and it’s at least as irritating to them as it is everyone else, if not more, so you can understand when they get a little irritated at all these failures and questions,” said Scrape TV Disaster analyst Walter Lim. “They want to get out of there more than anyone. They are losing millions of dollars and all of this oil, all of this money is just pouring into the ocean and will never be regained. They understandably want to just get out and get on with their lives but they can’t and won’t be able to until the hole is plugged.”
The company has reportedly spent over $500 million since the start of the disaster, a number which does not include lost revenue.
“We learned with incidents like Chernobyl and Bhopal that these kinds of incidents can

take a long time to clean up and that means a whole lot of briefings and a whole lot of news conferences. There is no way around it and they are going to have to realize that even when they do plug the hole there will still be a significant amount of work to be done,” continued Lim. “I’m sure they are going to be more than a little irritated by this whole incident for a long time to come. Their frustration is understandable but the reality if things are going to be uncomfortable for a little while yet, even if this latest effort works, which considering their attitude is very unlikely.”
Tony Hayward, the CEO of the company, has reportedly stopped talking to everyone about the ‘whole stupid oil thing’.
