DEDICATION TO GOD DOESN’T SAVE ORAL ROBERTS FROM THE GRAVE
December 15 2009
Newport Beach, CA – The Evangelical movement began almost 300 years ago as an offshoot of Protestantism as a reaction to a perceived secularism occurring across the United Kingdom. As the years moved on, so too did the evangelical movement,
evolving into a more and more radical movement and eventually making its way across the pond to the United States. It was in the U.S. that the movement truly took on its modern form, eschewing pious religious belief for radicalism and fundamentalism led in large part by two men, Billy Graham and Oral Roberts.
That power duo, who coincidentally were born just months apart, weren’t just the chief spokesmen for the religious conservatism so prevalent across the United States but also the Ronald Reagan-style conservatism that has so dominated the American political scene for the last thirty years. Now though, despite a lifelong dedication to the Lord, one of those men has died. Aged 91, Oral Roberts died Tuesday as a result of complications from pneumonia, a thoroughly unholy end for a man so dedicated to the literal word of God and interpretation of the Bible, and a man so dedicated to the promotion of that faith on national television.
“It is with great sadness that I have to confirm that Minister Roberts has indeed
passed from our world into that of the Lord. Minister Roberts was admitted to the hospital over the weekend where he was diagnosed with pneumonia. Early today the Lord in his great wisdom took the Minister from us and back into his bosom,” said a spokesperson for the Roberts family. “While we are all in mourning it gives us great joy to know that he is sharing eternity with the Lord in Heaven. Minister Roberts’ life was a mixed bag of blessing with both tragedy and triumph, but the Good Lord saw fit to not give him any challenge that he could not endure. We will all remember him for the good of his life, not for the ills. Our prayers are with the Roberts family.”
It’s not immediately clear what the funeral arrangements for Roberts will be, but it is believed that because he was worth millions, it will be quite elaborate.
“Aside from his contribution to popular religion and the conservative movement in the United States, Roberts helped to revolutionize the money making potential of Christianity. Billy Graham was a major player in that realm as well, but it was Roberts who really monetized religion in new ways for the first time,” said Scrape TV Religion analyst Bertram Gas. “Before that movement began religion relied on passing the basket to parishioners. The advent of television gave them a whole new audience to not only preach to, but also to draw dollars from. That allowed a monetization of religion in ways that truly changed the landscape, and Oral Roberts was the pioneer in that field.”
At the time of his death Roberts was drawing a six figure salary from his Evangelical Association, much more than most priests and preachers.
“Roberts, along with his contemporaries, proved that religion could make money. Up until that time religion had been on a steady decline in revenue, losing much of the power and influence that it had for centuries. Roberts helped change that forever,” continued Gas. “It’s really too bad that despite all that money he had earned for God, the Lord still decided to take him away in such a pedestrian manner. There was no beam of light or shaking of the ground, just a really bad cold. Maybe Graham will fare better when he goes.”
Despite some financial troubles of late, it’s believed that Roberts’ legacy will continue to earn long after his death.
