NAACP THANKS SLAVERY FOR CONTINUED PROSPERITY

February 12 2010

Baltimore, MD – For more than 100 years that NAACP has stood as the preeminent advocacy organization in the United States. Seeing the nation through lynching’s, segregation, the murders of major figures such as Martin Luther King, and eventually naacp logo
seeing the election of the first black President, there’s little doubt about the organization’s impact on American society. In a present where black men are movie stars and leaders of industry, where the relics of the racist past are little more than memory, one might think that the NAACP would have lost much of its relevance, but nothing could be further from the truth.

Despite major advances in all spectrums of American society, the remnants of slavery and segregation persist in the United States. In the inner cities of Los Angeles and New York, in the burned our buildings of Detroit, in the murder rates right in their own backyard of Baltimore and Washington, the harsh reality of two divided cultures remains. Because of that, so too does the mandate of the NAACP which in recent years has changed from an advocacy organization to more of a social organization, helping young people and advocating education and healthcare as standards for urban renewal. Throughout their long and sometimes controversial history, the organization has stood as one of the most important of social organizations in the country, and now they are finally acknowledging what made it all possible, slavery.benjamin jealous

“The NAACP has shepherded the cause of all colored people in the United States for over a century now and we are immensely proud of that effort. With the Presidency of Barack Obama it’s clear that our mandate has been successful but that does not mean that our efforts are ended, or that our story is complete,” said President Benjamin Jealous. “There are many battles still to be fought and a larger war to be won yet. While our country has undergone dramatic changes, the fight goes on. Now though is the time to acknowledge our success and the people who brought us here. One truth is that without the advent of slavery and segregation our organization would never have existed and that is something we need to finally embrace to truly move further.”

Officially slavery was ended in 1862, though many states took up to three years to follow through with the ratification. The establishment of the NAACP was never designed as advocacy against slavery when it was established over forty years later.slave ship

“There’s little doubt that that slavery created the conditions that allowed for, and necessitated, the establishment of the NAACP and other advocacy organizations but it is not the reason. Acknowledging the history of the United States in this area has been an important part of the healing of modern America, but this is reaching a little bit,” said Scrape TV American analyst Dave Davidson. “It’s a hard thing for an organization like this in today’s world. As much as they celebrate the success of people like Obama or say, Will Smith, these people represent the demise of their relevance. By throwing slavery back into the mix they can remind people of how bad it can really be and likely increase support.”

The NAACP has an estimated 300,000 members, out of an estimated 40 million black people in the country. The organization has also endured criticism over its tax exempt status and other fiscal controversies.slavery

“I mean realistically if the country went into the toilet there is a very good chance that many people across the country would return to the old days. As many advances as black people have had in the last few decades they are still significantly a minority and certain people would seek to take out their frustrations on people who are different,” continued Davidson. “Perhaps if the economy collapses or Al Qaeda strikes again and things really go south they would gain relevance again. By reminding people of the bad old days, they are certainly putting themselves in a good spot.”

In a recent poll many members of the NAACP supported the return of slavery.
