POPE VOWS TO CONTINUE SEX ABUSE DESPITE GROWING SCANDAL
March 29 2010
Vatican City – The Catholic Church, and by extension all leadership castes of the Christian faith, have been hit by controversy before. Reformation, the Crusades, and countless other crises have come and gone despite real verifiable threats to the
institution. In recent years tacit support for Nazi Germany, concerns over birth control and, most significantly, the ongoing sex abuse scandals have been hitting the church hard. Now with those scandals reaching into the very heart of the Catholic faith, the Pope himself, the institution that has stood for so long is perhaps facing its greatest challenge yet.
Already faced with declining numbers, the rising influence of both Atheism and Islam around the world, and a growing sense of being out of touch, the Catholic Church has never before been faced with such profound challenges to its status as the leader of the faith. With the addition of the growing child abuse scandal and the church could be faced with a perfect storm of challenges that at the very least could diminish the influence of the Vatican and encourage young people to seek religious guidance from elsewhere. Intimately involved in the scandal himself however, the defender of the faith has come out aggressively against the challenges declaring that the church, the faith, and the sex abuse will go on no matter the challenges.
“Jesus Christ leads us towards courage which does not allow us to be intimidated by the chatter of dominant opinions, towards patience which supports and sustains others. I will not be intimidated by accusations, I will not cede to them, and neither will the Vatican,” Pope Benedict declared in his Holy Week homily. It is his first public comments on the sex abuse scandals which have been plaguing the church in recent weeks.
“There have been accusations of child abuse for decades but never before has the

scandal hit the Vatican itself or even remotely touched the Pope in such sensitive and delicate areas. No sitting Pope has been directly accused of knowing of such incidents and doing nothing about them. Of course John Paul had a different kind of charm and could get away with a lot more,” said Scrape TV Religion analyst Bertram Gas. “Benedict has that rough German edge to him, that matter-of-fact personality which doesn’t endear him to a lot of people making them a lot more likely to speak out, which has caused this problem. The pontiff himself hasn’t been accused yet, but having so many people so close to him on the chopping block has to weigh heavily on him and on the church, which is why he has come out swinging.”
A close aide and two priests formerly under his direct supervision have come under scrutiny in the scandal.
“The key here is to bring the Church above these accusations. By its design, the Church is above the works of man. It is in direct contact with the Holy and therefore must be above the actions of man, which is exactly what these accusations are saying it has not done. Child abuse, whether sexual or otherwise, has long been a part of the Christian faith and such actions can’t be undone simply because people are complaining about it and the Pope knows that,” continued Gas. “This is not a situation like with Pope Pius supporting the Nazis where you can claim that they didn’t know what was happening, but it requires the same type of attitude. They cannot allow the institutions and tools of man undo that of the Holy.”
Members of the Vatican hierarchy have reportedly been in touch with children all over the world since the abuse scandal broke.
