SEA TURTLES GETTING IN THE WAY OF CONTROLLED OIL BURNS IN GULF

July 1 2010

Venice, LA – In the immediate aftermath of the destruction of the Deepwater Horizon almost two months ago BP quite correctly began to worry about the long term effects on their business. Like any accident, the destruction of that vessel undoubtedly bp coporate logo
shocked the company, sending them into panic, but like any responsible company, they quickly turned to assessing the situation and trying to organize a response that would best suit their shareholders and workers. While such actions may be deemed cold, the economic compromise that would directly affect 80,000 people had to be foremost on their mind.

In the intervening months the company has had one failure after another in trying to stop the leak that resulted from that explosion and that has created economic and political fallout that are threatening to completely dismantle the company. Add to that the impending years of litigation and catastrophic economic and environmental damage to the region and you have a situation that simply could not have been managed more poorly. With oil still pouring into the water there is likely no group more eager to see the end of the spill that the people at BP who are not only seeing profits flowing into the ocean but more and more litigation by the minute. Faced with many obstacles to solving the problem, a new issue has arisen in the form of sea turtles which simply do not burn as easily as oil. bp oil burning

“When the weather is calm and the sea is placid, ships trailing fireproof booms corral the black oil, the coated seaweed and whatever may be caught in it, and torch it into hundred-foot flames, sending plumes of smoke skyward in ebony mushrooms,” wrote the LA Times. “The conventional wisdom when it comes oil spills is that is you can keep the oil out at sea you will be able to minimize damage and while that may be true, the damage created at sea is still devastating and will have a long term impact on the ecosystem and ultimately the economy of the region.”

The majority of the turtles caught in the burn region are the endangered Kemp Turtles which are notoriously slow and stupid, particularly so when covered in crude oil.turtle

“We are making every effort we can to remove animals before the burns progress but sometimes that just isn’t possible. It is in the best interest of the burn and recovery teams to ensure all wildlife is removed from the area but sometimes that just isn’t possible and as a result some animals appear to be dying,” said a BP spokesperson. “The reality is that many of the larger animals cause problems for the burn efforts. Turtles in particular have these hard shells that take a great deal of effort to burn away. They swim through the burning oil disrupting the fire field and allowing oil to escape. Many times they also thrash around as they are dying allowing oil to escape the burn area. Trust me, we want them out as much as anyone but they are hard to catch.”

The spokesperson stated that other marine animals such as fish burn quite easily are not a serious impediment to the process.

“What started as a shocking story has become this long and seemingly endless turtle soup
nightmare for everyone all around. Whatever the long term restitution might be the reality is this is never going to go away completely. Children will be picking up tar balls twenty years from now and some species will simply be eradicated from the planet,” said Scrape TV Business analyst Ken Green. “People have quite correctly criticized BP but they need this to end just as much as anyone else and they are being faced with issue after issue and now this newest problem. Frankly they just figure out a way to burn hotter and just incinerate the turtles completely so that they cease to hinder the recovery efforts. The last thing they need is another obstacle.”

BP engineers have reportedly begun testing new propellants in laboratory testing but have still not found anything that will burn turtle shell effectively.
