SEX SCANDAL PROMPTS YOUNG CATHOLICS TO SEEK TEACHING JOBS
April 29 2010
Vatican City – The ongoing sex abuse scandal that has enveloped the Catholic Church as well as followers of the faith around the world has caused many to question whether or not there is a future to the faith at all. In particular, that question has
consumed young German Catholics who looked to Pope Benedict, one of their own, as a kind of saviour for their own personal faith. With the scandal showing no signs of abating many in that country and beyond are questioning whether or not the Catholic Church is even relevant anymore.
That concern has many young people, particularly those in Germany, questioning whether or not a life in the Church is something they might want to pursue, leaving the possibility of even more out of touch Catholic hierarchy a real possibility. Bringing life to those fears is the increasing number of young German men applying for positions in teaching and as scout leaders all across the country, seeking professions with far less notoriety than a life in the church. With the controversy only expanding and the church come likely to implement increased scrutiny over their own personnel, many fear that the heyday of accepted molestation might be over, leaving few avenues for those pursuing such a career.
“As a young boy I always grew up admiring the Church for so many things. My parents are both very devout Catholics and we spent every Sunday in mass. I have always been fascinated by the religion and by the artifacts of church culture ever since I was a little boy and always wanted to be involved,” said ‘Gerhard’ a 22-year old from Berlin. “Once I became a teenager and started to recall the many times I was molested by priests I truly realized how important the life really was to me. I wanted to do the same thing to young boys. I wanted to bring them the word of God through my warm, soft hands but now I am not so sure. The Church just doesn’t seem so safe anymore.”
Such sentiment has become rampant across the country but has also been spreading to other countries with significant Catholic populations such as France and even Italy, the church’s backyard.
“There’s little doubt that changes are going to have to be made in the Catholic
infrastructure and that is going to fundamentally alter the way people within the church behave and see the institution. There was a time when these types of offences would result in a slap on the wrist at worst but that will not be the case anymore, at least not in the short term. The culture of the church has to change and it will,” said Scrape TV Religion analyst Bertram Gas. “Unfortunately that means that a lot of youth will be bled out of the faith. While inevitably outside pedophiles will be dissuaded it is the molesters created by previous regimes that will be shut out and forced to pursue safer career paths.”
Though there has been no solid scientific link, many psychologists believe that molested children are more likely to molest others when they grow older.
“There are plenty of professions that allow unfettered access to children but the church was the only one that allowed real protection for the molesters. Schools and other organizations will turn people over to the police so the risks are much higher, even if the selection is better,” continued Gas. “I would expect that the Catholic ranks will thin significantly over the next few years, at least until this controversy dies down and they are able to get back to business as usual.”
The leading candidate for the next Pope is Cardinal Angelo Scola who looks quite creepy.
