STUDY FINDS BACON STORIES TAKING DRAMATIC DROP
July 6 2010
Washington, D.C. – There are a few authors in the history of Science Fiction that could truly be considered game changers. Many of those writers came in the so-called ‘New Wave’ period of the genre which gave the genre more complexity and diversity,
separating it from its space opera roots. Writers such as Theodore Sturgeon, Fritz Leiber, and Alfred Bester led the way allowing writers such as Harlan Ellison, John Brunner, J.G. Ballard, and perhaps most notably Philip K. Dick to begin changing the genre, and ultimately pop culture, forever.
There at the beginning was a writer named Richard Matheson who crafted one of the seminal works of the New Wave, ‘I Am Legend’. A rarity in any genre, ‘Legend’ was loved and acclaimed in its time, eventually spawning three motion picture adaptations and hosts of imitators. It’s unlikely that Matheson could have realized how influential his book would become, inspiring not only future SF writers such as William Gibson, but also filmmakers such as George A. Romero and his creation of ‘Night of the Living Dead’, which itself spawned the zombie phenomenon. Of all those influences though, it wasn’t until 2007 that Matheson’s work saw its greatest success with the release of the Will Smith starring film of the book, and the subsequent bacon frenzy that overtook the western world, a frenzy that a new study has found has dramatically tapered off.
“For about two years we saw this huge uptick in bacon-related stories and bacon buying throughout the United States. However, by the end of 2009 the pace started to slow and now six months into 2010 the trend seems to have reversed itself. While we certainly expected a drop, this one has been dramatic and very precipitous,” said lead researcher Ed Bell. “We expect that as the year moves on we will see even more declines and by the beginning of next year bacon may just become another food. A delicious one, but with ordinary levels of consumption and attention.”
The study was financed by major bacon manufacturers including Oscar Mayer.
“Not many people know this but Will Smith’s line in that movie was totally unintentional. It was in the script but it was not meant to be a major line. Much like the ‘I’ll be back’ line from ‘The Terminator’, it was simply a response to a question of sorts and was not meant to stand out. It was just one of those moments that took off, they caught lightning in a bottle,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “From everything I’ve read the bacon thing was already starting to take off but it was that movie that really cinched it and brought it into the mainstream. It’s understandable that the attention would wane eventually but it is sad to see nonetheless. Bacon is truly delicious and the attention brought all kinds of uses for it. Now I imagine we will start seeing fewer bacon-related foods on the horizon which is really a loss for all of humanity, except the Jews and Muslims of course.”
Smith and director Francis Lawrence reportedly now receive free bacon for life.
“Supposedly they are creating a prequel to the film so that could change things. Perhaps we will be able to find out where he found that bacon he had been saving, perhaps that will help us understand exactly why he got so angry that they had started eating it without his permission. It’ll be difficult to strike gold twice, but this is bacon we’re talking about,” continued Temple. “These kinds of phenomenons are impossible to predict never mind create and there is the chance that any future effort could been seen as pandering. Of course it would be delicious pandering so that might be forgiven.”
Matheson, who is now 84, does not eat bacon on doctor’s orders though he has admitted that he has never been the biggest fan, preferring ham, which is also delicious.
