TONY HAYWARD’S YACHT RACE UNIMPEDED BY OIL
June 20 2010
London, U.K. – There has been to no bigger story in the last few months than the Gulf of Mexico oil leak. Not the war in Afghanistan, not the ethnic cleansing in Kyrgyzstan, not even the World Cup have been able to take the spotlight from the
gusher of oil deep below the ocean floor. Perhaps it is our lust for oil itself that is causing such an obsession, perhaps it is the environmental and economic destruction, or perhaps it is just one of those stories that catches fire regardless of sense or logic.
Regardless of the reasons, the story continues to be big business for news agencies and politicians throughout the United States. Replete with death, destruction, and a cold and heartless villain, the BP oil spill will likely continue to be on the minds of people for months and even years to come. For many the man at the centre of the whole mess, BP CEO Tony Hayward, is very much filling out his role as the main villain, the evil Emperor well on his way to destroying the world’s oceans with a massive oil slick to somehow achieve world domination. Whether such motivations are accurate or not that is likely the tale that will be told, none of which seems to bother Hayward who enjoyed a luxurious yacht race free of massive oil slicks.
“He's spending a few hours with his family at a weekend. I'm sure that everyone would understand that. He will be back to deal with the response. It doesn't detract from that at all. This race is one of the biggest sailing events in the world and he's well known to have a keen interest in it,” said BP spokesman Robert Wine. “Tony does have a boat in this race though he will not be sailing himself. This is one of the biggest races in the world and Tony wanted to make sure he was here. The conditions were great without a drop of oil to be seen.”
The race was run around the Isle of Wright, very far from the Gulf of Mexico.
“Hayward has garnered a great deal of criticism personally as a result of this incident but much of that is not fair. While a CEO of a major company is ultimately responsible

for the actions of his people he can’t be paying attention all the time. With a company of this size it’s likely that Hayward hadn’t even met the people involved never mind being charged with managing them. That’s just the nature of big business,” said Scrape TV Business analyst Ken Green. “You could argue that he is responsible for the culture of the company and that that is what prompted the behaviour that led to this explosion and leak but the only warning that he had that something was going awry was hundreds and hundreds of safety fines which in the grand scheme really doesn’t mean a whole lot in a company this size.”
The company has long held the record for the most safety violations of any other major oil company.
“There was this idea that the whole thing would just eventually go away but they unfortunately found exactly what they were looking for; a major source of oil. That has meant that the thing will just keep spilling and spilling and they are going to have to do something about it before long,” continued Green. “Luckily the oil has been contained to a relatively small area for now which means that while some economies are being affected, not everyone is including the people around the yacht races. It would have been a shame if the whole had to be cancelled because of a little oil in the water.”
Hayward’s boat did not win the race. The Gold Roman Bowl went to the ‘Nordic Bear’ owned and raced by Brian Appleyard.
