AL QAEDA PLANNING HUGE HOLIDAY SURPRISES
December 19 2010
Baghdad, Iraq – Given the fractured nature of the world, the diversity of cultures and belief systems, there is never really a moment or a period when all seven billion of us just stop and reflect. Amidst all the war and strife, that pervades so much of
human existence, there is rarely a moment to breathe, rarely a moment to stop and contemplate what it is we have and what it is we can do with our lives. Occasionally though large numbers of the population are able to stop and at least for a moment, just be.
For about two billion of us that time comes at the start of winter every year, on December 25th. While its roots are certainly in Christian faith and theology, Christmas has become less of a religious holiday and more a time of peace and love, something often forgotten in much of the world. Because of that Christmas has become less a religious practice and more of a social convention, a time where people of all faiths and backgrounds can celebrate the simple act of being. With Christmas celebrations now being readied across the world, it is clear that the religious nature of the day has more or less vanished. There is no better example of that in the recent announcement of a big Christmas plans by Al Qaeda, who are apparently promising a big blow out.
“We have been receiving intelligence that a group affiliated with Al Qaeda has been in
deep in planning large scale events across Europe and the United States for the Christmas season. While we do not know that nature of these events, it is clear from the chatter we have been hearing that they will be large,” said Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari. “We do not have clear information as to which countries will be the focus of the events, but it is clear that the organization is planning something very large for the holidays and we need to be very much aware of these happenings.”
Iraqi officials have contacted Interpol with the information. That organization has in past years been a go between for international Christmas celebrations.
“I think even the most cynical of people have to embrace Christmas. Particularly in western nations you see people of all different religions celebrating the holiday because it has taken on a life of its own, totally separate from religious practices. That has made the holiday essentially secular in a lot of ways,” said Scrape TV Terrorism analyst Doug Davids. “There is no better evidence of that than this planned celebration. The fact that an organization based on religious intolerance and violence could put aside their differences even for a few days and join in the celebration has shown how widespread and universal the holiday has become. I doubt very much that we are seeing the nicer version of the organization, but if we even see it for a few days, it’s something.”
It’s believed likely that the organization will be using fireworks of some kind, an Al Qaeda favourite.
“This is the first time that Al Qaeda has officially become involved with Christmas and so its likely things won’t go over smoothly, but the fact that they have decided to get involved at any level is really heart warming, particularly at this time of the year,” continued Davids. “I imagine that things will get back to normal come January, but at least for a little time all the fussing and the feuding can end and we can all just get back to celebrating what it means to be alive.”
There is apparently no truth to the rumour that Al Qaeda mastermind Osama bin-Laden has any plans to dress as Santa.
