BIGGEST LOSER STRIKE LOSING A LITTLE BIT OF FOCUS
November 18 2010
Los Angeles, CA – Weight Loss has never been an easy thing for anyone really. With growing waistlines throughout the world and an increasingly sedentary lifestyle for much of the advanced nations many health experts are concerned that a trend that
cannot be stopped has started to advance precipitously forward, a movement that could result in generations of health problems that will not only harm lives, but also economies that are already struggling with declining populations.
Because weight and weight loss has become such a hot button topic in recent years, it has also quite naturally become, ironically, a growth industry. Starting in the 1970’s professional exercisers started to proliferate throughout the United States and eventually throughout the world. Contrary to their intent of course, obesity has only increased which in turn has increased the size and power of the weight loss industry. Over the last few years one of the biggest players in that industry has been the television show ‘The Biggest Loser’. Dedicated to helping morbidly obese people overcome their addiction to food and sloth, the show has become a massive hit across the world, which in turn has made millions for producers. Like all success stories though there are problems on the set of the show in the United States which has now incurred the wrath of the unions, strikers who are suddenly starting to run out of steam.
“This is a high-profile show with a strong crew that is facing an obstructive employer. This isn't about greed or money. This is about health benefits and pensions for the crew and their families. Below-the-line workers don't get any less sick,” said union representative Mike Miller. “It’s a hard thing anytime we go on strike but sometimes we need to do what we need to do in order to earn the rights that our people deserve. Yes, they are getting a little tired but they are bound and determined to see this through and get what they deserve.”
Production on the show has resumed following the start of the strike.
“We are here to get what we deserve. The kind of actions, the kind of behaviour that the producers have engaged in is totally unacceptable and we need to fight not only
for ourselves but for anyone else who could fall in the path of this kind of behaviour. This fight is bigger than us and we intend to fight on as long as we need to,” said one protestor outside the show’s production offices. “It is hot out here and we could use some water. I think everyone wants to keep this thing together but it’s hard. All this shouting and walking is really getting to our people but we are doing our best to keep spirits high. I wouldn’t say we have hit a brick wall or anything like that but some people are getting close. We will fight on though, we are determined to get what’s ours.”
The show has been from the beginning a non-union production.
“Labour problems are something that everyone, big or small, has to deal with. The problem can be amplified with success because the people making the thing happen start to see how well a show is doing and they understandably want a piece. Producers of course want more or less the whole pie to themselves and aren’t interested in sharing, even a little bit, and you end up with these problems,” said Scrape TV Labour analyst Mika Borman. “The union is pushing this and really wants to get a foothold in reality television, but it is the disparity between the have and the have-nots that really powers the situation. Everyone wants a piece of that delicious, delicious pie but not everyone is willing to share and that always causes problems.”
The union reportedly brought a bunch of donuts to the strikers, which perked them up temporarily before crashing again.
