FOCUS ON CLEAN CHOCOLATE TECHNOLOGY FORCES HERSHEY TO CLOSE DOORS
October 9 2010
Hershey, PA – There is little doubt that the environment of the world is changing. While scientists and politicians continue the debate as to how our physical environment is altering, one thing that isn’t up for debate is the fact that our social,
economic, and political world is undergoing a profound change. The recent economic crisis aside, the realities of a changing world are starting to impact all aspects of modern life as the dwindling resources of the planet come under greater and greater demand.
At the heart of much of that change is the slow move towards more environmentally-friendly technologies, which is often also at the heart of the political debate. The surging economies of countries such as China and India as well as ongoing military threats from oil-rich countries, have provoked a dramatic change amongst ordinary people and businesses, occasionally at the same time. Case-in-point is the iconic Hershey factory in Pennsylvania which for more than a hundred years has provided kisses and peanut butter cups to the world but is now facing the new environmental and political realities by shutting down its original facility and moving to a new factory that will help the company abide by government regulations that focus on so-called ‘Clean Chocolate’ initiatives.
“We are of course saddened that the old building will be lost but this is a time for celebration. Generations of workers have passed through those old doors and much of the city has grown up around the old facility but times have to move onward and upward and that is exactly what we are doing. The old girl has done all of us a great service,” said a Hershey spokesperson. “This new facility will be much cleaner and much more streamlined which will allow us to continue producing high quality products at affordable prices just as we always have, as well as keeping in line with government regulations. We are very excited about this move even as we are sad about losing the old girl.”
Approximately 500 workers will be laid off in the transition.
“There is a hard reality facing many companies in the new economy, economy 2.0 as it
were and while that brings great opportunities to some, it means a whole lot difficulty for others. One would not think that a company as iconic as Hershey would suffer this kind of loss given the nature of the product they produce. Chocolate is after all the best comfort food,” said Scrape TV Business analyst Ken Green. “However, the realities of new regulations and an increased focus on environmental issues has forced a lot of companies to cut back and change the way business is done. This is of course the biggest argument against these types of changes because the financial burden can be huge. With a company like Hershey the costs can be absorbed, but for smaller companies it just makes business unfeasible.”
Hershey still operates multiple plants across the world and employs over 14,000 people.
“Companies all over the world are going to have to start facing this new reality and while it hurts, it will turn out in the long run. The history of these types of disruptions is that often they end up yielding much greater results, that the world is much better off after them then they were before them,” continued Green. “That is little comfort to people losing their jobs, but it is the way things go. For consumers what it means in this case is cleaner chocolate and that is good for everyone, especially chocolate eaters.”
Hershey the town is also considering closing shop and moving a few miles down the road though plans are still in the early stages.
