IBM PLEDGES $50 MILLION TO PURCHASE 100 CITIES IN PRELUDE TO GLOBAL DOMINATION
November 10 2010
Armonk, NY – Technology has always been one of the great equalizers in society. While its certainly true that that not all people are equal, and likely never will be, the gap between the poor and the wealthy has narrowed dramatically in the last few
centuries largely as a result of technology and the benefits it brings. Whether it was the printing press spreading the word of the Bible the internet spreading cute babies across the world, technology has tightened the gap between the haves and the have-nots.
For the last hundred years one company above all others has driven the rise of modern technology, been one of the major influences on popular cultures and the way in which we communicate, and now IBM is using that influence to once again change the world. While other companies such as Apple, Microsoft, and Google garner most of the headlines in today’s technology oriented world, the reality is that none of them would even be around if it weren’t for the work of IBM in the twentieth century. Even today the influence of the company is, while slightly diminished, still felt in virtually all aspects of everyday life from the computers we use to the videogames we play. Now IBM is using that influence, and the related wealth it has created, to purchase a number of cities in what is likely the start of world domination.
“Cities are vitally important to society and the economy. But they have enormous
challenges and need the innovation, creativity and technical know-how to tackle
longstanding, tough issues and plan for the future. We’re excited at the prospect of helping city leaders address the most demanding challenges of our time and make their cities even more liveable,” said IBM vice president said Stanley S. Litow. “The cities that have been chosen are a diverse bunch that show the innovative nature of the human species and give us at IBM a unique opportunity to delve into new areas. We look forward to the partnerships we have with these cities.”
Amongst the cities chosen for purchase are Katowice, Poland, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, and surprisingly large cities including Rio, Baltimore, and Ho Chi Minh City.
“For a company like IBM the time for world domination has, frankly, more or less passed. They have had their time in the limelight and now it is diminished. The company still has great revenue flow and their technology is literally everywhere, but they are far from their peak and that is going to make it hard to win the hearts and minds of the people,” said Scrape TV International analyst Gustav Hander. “Conquering a nation requires not just money or bullets but also influence, it requires that the people take on your form of government and rule because, ultimately, there are always more people than there are governors.”
The company apparently turned down Buffalo even though a New York State offered to pay them to take it off their hands.
“All conquerors have learned, usually the hard way, that the most difficult task is winning over the people. In today’s world where there is access to all kinds of information and outside influence that winning over the hearts and minds of the people is more difficult than ever, ironically much of that is IBM’s doing,” continued Hander. “Flat out buying cities is a good start and it’s interesting that they are going both large and small which could either be a really smart move, or a death knell. It’s going to be hard to stay subtle when you’re trying to take over the world and so capturing large population centres might be the best way to go. I am amazed that they got some of these places so cheap, but I guess they’ve got bargaining power.”
People in the area around Austin, Texas, another city that was purchased, have reported seeing an IBM military presence.
