RADIATION MONITORING EQUIPMENT SEEN AS KEY TO JAPANESE ECONOMIC REVIVAL
March 17 2011
Tokyo, Japan – Massive tragedies like the one that has unfolded in Japan are not things which any country can recover from easily. However, some nations, Japan included, are far better equipped to bounce back in an effective way than poor nations
such as Haiti which, more than a year after their devastating quake is still in ruins. Still, even in a wealthy country such as Japan it will take many years to recover and restore the majority of what has been lost, but already things are starting to look up.
Power is starting to come back online throughout most of the affected region and even road reconstruction has begun in some areas. While it most certainly will be a number of years for the buildings to return, the economy of the country has already started to find new areas for growth, something particularly important in the wake of a number of corporate and manufacturing shutdowns. With the growing threat of a full out nuclear disaster still ongoing in the north, demand for radiation monitoring and protection equipment has skyrocketed in the last week providing the country with one small economic bright spot, something manufacturers are hoping they can extend for the long term.
“We have been overwhelmed with demand, out business has gone up by more than two thousand percent and this has forced us to bring more people into jobs. For a very long time we principally sold to government facilities and hospitals but since this has happened we have been seeing a major demand in normal retail settings which is an area we had never before explored,” said a spokesperson for one facility in Fukuoka in the southern part of the country. “We expect that this demand will remain high for a number of weeks to come but we also anticipate that increased anxiety over other potential nuclear problems will permanently increase the demand for our products. We do certainly understand the tragedy that has occurred, but we also understand that the country must recover and that is what we are trying to do here.”
The company has also received orders from abroad, particularly in the United States amidst fears of a radioactive cloud reaching the west coast of that country.
“This is certainly a tough time for the people of Japan and the country as a whole but there has to come a time when things start to get better and they don’t do that without effort. Luckily Japan is in a position to be able to mount a real restoration of their country and so the immediate pain won’t last too long, hopefully anyway,” said Scrape TV Business analyst Ken Green. “Few people realize what unstable financial ground Japan has been on for the last few years and this disruption is really the last thing it needed, given the cost to restore and the loss from all these businesses shutting down. Any growth is good in that scenario.”
Japan is the most indebted country in the world despite having the third largest economy.
“Obviously there is going to be a bit of surge, a kind of tidal wave effect right now which is going to spark a lot of business and that will eventually subside. However this is the time to strike, to normalize this kind of gear and get people used to seeing it, that will help drive the business in the long term and allow this sector to sustain strength,” continued Green. “Most people take things like radiation gear for granted but I don’t think that will be the case anymore. I would be surprised in fact if we don’t see massive growth in this industry not just in Japan but all over the world.”
At least three nuclear-themed games have already started development and various displays of high school girls wearing radiation gear have started to pop up across the country.
