UPS CONFIRMS THAT BOMBS WOULD HAVE REACHED THEIR TARGETS ON TIME
October 30 2010
London, U.K. – Even a few years ago the notion of receiving mail from all the way around the world in only a few days would have been unimaginable. Today our global network has made that thing, something totally foreign to previous generations, a
reality. Whether it is simple mail, Christmas presents, or consumer products, the integrated logistical network that spans across the globe has made mail delivery from anywhere, anytime, almost as simple as delivering by hand.
Of course, that immediate availability and access doesn’t just benefit grandmothers sending presents overseas, it also can benefit evil doers, as witnessed by the recent intercept of bombs aboard a UPS flight. While those bombs were intercepted via robust intelligence networks, the real possibility that future attempts, by more sophisticated plotters, could well get through has many security officials deeply concerned. Equally worried are the carriers that nearly helped carry out the bombing plot much to their own surprise. While UPS and other carriers have robust security already in place, this incident has made it clear that accident can and will occur. However, UPS officials have stressed that while this incident is certainly frightening, it is very much an anomaly and that the vast majority of parcels delivered by the service are not stopped be terrorism officials and that these packages would have been delivered on time had they not been stopped.
“This is obviously a trying and very frightening time. While we have certainly seen suspicious packages come through our system, we see them in fact every day, never have we seen packages that delivered these types of items or that could have caused this much damage,” said a UPS spokesperson. “I do however want to stress that this incident is in no way indicative of normal UPS operations. We pride ourselves on timely and safe delivery and that has not changed in the face of this incident. These packages would have been delivered on time and to their proper destination had they not contained bombs.”
The bombs were disguised within printers and printer cartridges. The delivery of any kind of technology from countries such as Yemen are automatically searched.
“UPS is the logistic company. We send millions of packages every day from and to destinations all across the world. There has been a temporary halt on deliveries originating in Yemen but we will be restoring services to and from that region once we have determined that all packages are explosives free,” continued the spokesperson. “I want to make clear that UPS has a strict no explosion policy that we are very diligent about enforcing. Explosives pose a danger to our personnel, our equipment, and most importantly our packages in danger. Our duty has been and will continue to be to our customers. UPS always delivers, on time, and that has not changed despite this incident.”
The UPS website does state that explosives will be subject to examination and may incur delays in delivery.
“An incident like this could be a huge blow to UPS. They are the biggest shipper in the world but the fact that they allowed a package like this to board a plane has to be a major concern to people looking to make shipments. I mean if that plane had blown up, and these explosive could have done that, all of these packages would have been lost. That would have been a serious blow to the company,” said Scrape TV Business analyst Ken Green. “This incident is not their fault but oftentimes that doesn’t matter. The hard reality is that people work on perception rather than reality and if the perception is that UPS shipments might explode, or simply be intercepted by police, well people are going to move to another service. It’s important that they get out this message that the packages would have been delivered on time were they not of an exploding nature.”
FedEx apparently does not have a policy on exploding packages and claim that these deliveries would have made it to their destination on time.
