ANDERSON COOPER’S NEW SHOW PUTTING PEOPLE INTO COMAS
October 3 2011
New York, NY – A few years ago CNN realized they were in tough against other cable networks and decided to stake their future fortunes on one person, a former reality show host. The hype aside, it appeared in those early days that the network had made a major fumble. They lost a number of high profile anchors, some like Glenn Beck to rival Fox, and their ratings collapsed. Recently, though, things have started to turn around and the show hosted by that risk, Anderson Cooper, has started to turn things around. Nothing, though, lasts forever.
Hoping to capitalize on the surging success of Cooper, and potentially expand his persona Time Warner, his bosses, gave Cooper a daytime talk show. Despite the high hopes though, the ratings have been fairly slim and now appears to have put at least one person into a coma, something observers and even company officials may put an end to the show before it ever gets a chance to really take off, should it continue.
“The last thing any television show wants is to have its primary audience in a vegetative state. There is no advantage to that in the long run. Yes, they will sit there for the whole program but they won’t be responding to the commercials and that is what advertisers want. Without that, no one will want to be a part of the program. People in comas aren’t the best customers,” said a Time Warner insider. “The show isn’t bad but they need to do something about the coma thing. It’s isn’t so much that a few people have slipped into the abyss, it’s the fear that such a thing will be repeated by watching the show and that will turn people away. It’s a concern.”
The first person to slip into a coma was a teen who was to appear on the show. Cooper and a producer urged the teen to engage in risky behaviour so he would have something to talk about, which caused a fall and a comatose state. The teen will no longer be appearing on the show.
“No one wants to watch daytime TV and risk becoming a vegetable. That has been a tried and true ethos throughout the history of television. People have no interest in brain damage when watching TV no matter how charming the host may be,” continued the insider. “That is going to hurt ratings and potentially driver advertisers and stations away. CNN could take the ratings hit for awhile but syndicated shows are a different animal and comas really don’t jive with that business model. I don’t think they are going to be as patient.”
There have been no reports of comatose states from Cooper’s other television venture, though many people found his stint on ‘The Mole’ a little dull, though most just fell asleep.
“It’s tough to make these types of shows work in the first place but when you are starting to put people into comas almost immediately, well that is not a good sign. There have only been a few shows in history that have done that and all saw the axe pretty early. Comas just aren’t good television,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “Cooper certainly has a great television presence but he just doesn’t seem to have caught on and this is just clear evidence of that. I’d like to see him succeed but not with this cost, this is just too much frankly, especially for advertisers.”
The show continues with no further word of comas, yet.
