CATHOLICS AROUND THE WORLD REJOICE IN THE LORD’S CHOICE OF ANDROID OPERATING SYSTEM
December 10 2011
Vatican City – For all the talk of the decline of religion in the West, most of it totally valid, there is little debate that the Catholic Church still wields a great deal of control over much of the population of the planet. With more than a billion conscripts of varying degrees of faith, the Church is still the most powerful single institution the planet has ever, and is ever likely to see.
Not everyone, of course, follows the dogma set down by the church anymore, even the most fervent of the faithful, but enough do to allow the Church to retain its power and influence.
That has become a major issue in recent years as questions about how exactly the Church uses that influence have become more and more prominent. With issues like AIDS, child abuse, and religious extremism putting the Church on the hot seat, often on the wrong side, many have started to wonder whether or not the power it wields is even valid anymore. The Church though has tried to modernize, tried to change, realizing perhaps that doing so is the only way to stay relevant, but even those changes have often created controversy, just as the recent choice to make Android the official operating system of Catholicism will likely do going forward.
“Benedict XVI will activate the illumination from his apartments in the Vatican Apostolic Palace. He will touch the screen of a Sony "Tablet" with an "Android" operating system which, via the Internet, will transmit the command to switch on the electric current to the tree,” read the announcement from the Vatican.
The Pope later called the experience using the tablet smooth and user friendly, words that no doubt come as a great relief to the people behind Android and as poison to competitors, particularly Apple and their iPad.
Apple officials are reportedly considering closing their Vatican store in the wake of the controversial choice.
“It stings, it really does. Basically this means that the most popular platform in the world has been rejected by the Pope and the Catholic faith as a whole. It’s totally out of touch, as many things are with the Church, but knowing that doesn’t ease the pain any. We were really hoping,” said one Apple insider. “I mean I guess if they can’t get the child abuse thing right why would they get this right. I’m not saying that pedophiles use Android, but I’m also not not saying that. I know they don’t use Apple products. We keep track, we know.”
Android has rapidly taken over much of the space for operating systems across multiple devices since its release in 2007.
“We are very happy that the Pope found the device easy to use. He is just one of millions of people around the world to experience the ease and grace of our operating system and we are thrilled that he decided to endorse it,” said a spokesperson for Google, the company behind Android. “This is a great day for us but it is an even greater day for religious people all over the world who will now have the web at their fingertips in the most effective and efficient way possible. We are thrilled.”
Unlike the Apple device, Android does allow for viewing pornography which may have been the deciding factor for the Church.
