CHEVY CONFIRMS VOLTS WILL TAKE ABOUT THREE WEEKS TO EXPLODE AFTER CRASH

November 14 2011

Detroit, MI – While electric cars certainly haven’t been the revolution some thought they would be, the cars have still made an impact on the marketplace and that appears to be something that will continue for a long time to come.electric car

However, some adjustments are going to have be made by consumers for such a revolution to continue to grow, something which is often a problem especially when it comes to safety issues. Because electric cars are not powered in the same way as conventional vehicles, accidents can take on a different complexion than most people are used to dealing with, which will be very much the case with the leader of the electric revolution, the Chevy Volt.

Because the vehicle don’t run on traditionally very explosive gasoline, most consumers and safety personnel have made the assumption that the vehicles aren’t likely to explode after an accident, something which has proven true in the small number of incidents with the vehicles, at least immediately.

Following an incident with one of the vehicles, Chevy has now been forced to admit that their cars will indeed explode into flames after an accident, though it may take a little time, as much as three weeks, before that happens. The company has also admitted that they have no real timetable for such explosions and that they can indeed happen at pretty much anytime, or not at all, and there is no way for them to tell consumers one way or the other.chevy volt charging

“We recommend that all drivers use the utmost of care when driving our vehicles. The best prevention against explosion and fire is in preventing accidents in the first place. All vehicles carry with them the possibility of exploding after colliding with objects at high speeds regardless of their power source,” said a spokesperson for Chevy. “The Volt is still a car and is still capable of being incinerated after an accident, but because of the electrical nature of the power supply we have no way of predicting exactly when that will happen. We highly recommend safe driving to prevent such surprises.”

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has recommended that safety personnel drain the vehicle battery after an accident.

It’s not clear how widespread that new protocol will be implemented because of the low penetration of Volt vehicles in the marketplace. Chevy has only reported the single accident, which is still high in terms of percentage of incidents.car on fire

“The Volt is really a kind of revolution in car manufacturing for a lot of reasons, the biggest of which is really potential. Eventually more and more cars are going to become electric, it’s just the way of the future, and the Volt is the leading that charge, though fire and explosions could to put a kink in that,” said Scrape TV Automobile analyst Melissa Canning. “Hopefully they will eventually be able to at least narrow it down to a few days. It’s going to give a lot of people pause if they feel they are driving a ticking time bomb and that could kill the whole revolution, and a few drivers in the process. Hopefully they get that resolved.”

Chevy has not commented on the possibility of narrowing down the explosion timeframe.
