CHRISTOPHER HITCHENS CALLED BACK TO HEAVEN AFTER DOING HIS BEST TO TEST HUMAN FAITH
December 16 2011
Houston, TX – For years many people, people passionate and devoted to their faith, wish for the death of one person, Christopher Hitchens. Today, they got their wish. After a year and half battled with esophageal cancer, Hitchens succumbed to the disease surrounded by friends and family.
Hitchens, a now former contributing editor at Vanity Fair, had made his name challenging the status quo, by being a rebel. Specifically, he challenged religion and religious faith, becoming the foremost evangelist of Atheism across the world. That wasn’t all Hitchens did of course. He was a matchless writer, exploring subjects both intellectual and mundane well beyond simply challenging religion, but it is that for which he has become known, and that for which people wished him dead.
Hitchens, all through his personal challenges, remained steadfast in his opposition to religious belief, never once submitting to the common rhetoric of faith in his time of need. That, in turn, likely earned him a valued spot in the afterlife, having successfully challenged the faith of us normal humans, pushed atheism to the extreme levels of public tolerance, and therefore restored faith in God and Heaven for millions around the world.
“I love the imagery of struggle.I sometimes wish I were suffering in a good cause, or risking my life for the good of others, instead of just being a gravely endangered
patient. It does concentrate the mind, of course, to realise that your life is more rationed than you thought it was,” Hitchens wrote last year upon learning of the finality of his illness.
Hitchens was 62, more than enough time to stir up religious devotees and force them back into the light of the Almighty.
It’s not clear if his cancer had been prearranged with the Lord, or if God was simply working through Hitchens directly, something God is more than capable of doing.
“It’s really a sad day. We all knew it was coming, but that doesn’t make it any less sad. Whether or not you agreed with Hitchens and his view on life, he did successfully challenge people and that, above all else, is what we need. We don’t need answers, we need questions and that is what Hitchens gave us in abundance, and all for a great cause,” said Scrape TV Religion analyst Bertram Gas. “People have become very complacent in terms of their faith. They don’t pray at night, they don’t attend church regularly, and people like Hitchens remind them of that. It forces them back to their faith, making them more passionate than ever, while simultaneously eroding those whose devotion is limited.”
Hitchens spent most of the last year telling everyone he could that he had not turned to religion or prayer in the face of his deadly disease, making many of the faithful even angrier.
“I think, frankly, it was his work for Atheism that was perhaps his greatest triumph. He successfully pushed those people into a particular belief system and positioned them against other religions, further cementing their faith and radicalizing a group to the point of near irrelevancy. That was an incredible feat,” continued Gas. “It really does speak to the power of the human mind and the human experience. While I have little faith that God wasn’t working through him in some way, he still made his life his own and he dedicated so much of it to bringing millions back to the Lord. That will be his greatest legacy, and one deserving of a revered place in the Kingdom beyond.”
Hitchens body, in accordance with his wishes, will be thrown in a dumpster outside the hospital.
