DISNEY MAKING PLAY TO TAKE OVER FLORIDA WITH NEW POLITICAL DONATION RULES
November 1 2011
Los Angeles, CA – Like everything, almost everything, in life things ate Disney are rarely what you believe them to be when you are a child. Generations have grown up with Disney characters, movies and shows that are deeply embedded in our minds with nothing but pleasant thoughts surrounding them. Disney, though, is not the playful world that we imagine it as children. It is a corporation, a big one, run by adults who make a lot of money.
As a result the fantasies that we grow up with about that magical kingdom are really just that, fantasies. When in the adult world we realize that Disney is not the place we imagined it to be as children and is more of a playground for grownups than children.
Because it is such a large corporation, many things Disney does are kept secret, sometimes out of necessity, sometimes just because that’s what adult’s do. In particular, Disney has kept its political leanings very quiet despite giving millions to candidates, the latter of which will likely only increase with new, looser restrictions on donations, rules which will essentially allow the company to fund any candidates they wish, giving them sway over all aspects of American culture, economics, and politics.
“We contribute corporate funds to state and local political parties, candidates for state and local office, organizations that promote such candidates or positions on state and local issues. Our contributions are made on the basis of our objectives and policy priorities and not on the basis of the partisan affiliations,” said the company in a statement. Disney has been amongst the worst in terms of disclosure for political donations in the country.
It’s believed likely that with the new restrictions the company will seek Disney friendly candidates in both Florida and California where they are based, allowing them all types of new powers.
“Look, even politicians were kids at one time and so they are going to have some kind of affection for the company. They will have even more affection for money and so it’s a win-win for Disney, but not a great thing for democracy,” said Scrape TV Political analyst Gabriel Kinsey. “Essentially what this means is that the wealthiest people and the wealthiest corporations will be able to control political office, putting the candidates they want in charge, and running up the tab like crazy. That won’t be so much of a problem in California due to the number of companies, but they will essentially run Florida.”
Florida is home to the real Disney theme park, Disney World. The one in California kinda sucks.
“I doubt, seriously doubt, that we will see characters like Goofy and Donald Duck in office simply because they are fictional. Even a person dressed up as one of those characters would still have to run under his or her own name and besides, kids don’t vote, or at least not yet. I’d bet that if they can change that Disney will,” continued Kinsey. “Pretty soon, if Disney has its way, the entire state of Florida could be turned into a Disney World, a Disney State of sorts. While that may be great for kids it really doesn’t do much for adults and could actually hurt the state as a whole. It would be colourful, but everyone wearing those giant foam heads around would get old real fast. Plus the costs of everything will skyrocket.”
Mickey Mouse did run on a ticket in the 1960’s but came second last, just ahead of Howdy Doody.
