DOMINO’S AIMING TO BE THE FIRST FAST FOOD CHAIN ON THE MOON
September 5 2011
Tokyo, Japan – Pizza is perhaps the first and only lingua franca of food. No matter where you go in the world, people eat pizza. It is the communal dinner of millions of families, of stoners, and the fallback option for people who just can’t decide what to eat. In many ways, pizza has become the pinnacle of human culinary evolution.
Because of that, pizza is big business. Just about any city in just about any country in the world, even poorer nations, has a pizza place, or two, or three. In many of those places, that pizza place is Domino’s, one of the biggest in the world.
Now the company has set its sights beyond just the nations of planet Earth and has started planning for restaurants on the moon, a move which would firmly entrench them as the first fast food chain off planet Earth and likely the dominant off-world chain going forward.
“We started thinking about this project last year, although we have not yet determined when the restaurant might open,” Tomohide Matsunaga, a spokesperson for Domino’s Japan told The Daily Telegraph. “In the future, we anticipate there will be many people living on the moon, astronauts who are working there and, in the future, citizens of the moon.”
Early estimates put the cost at about 22 million dollars, which would likely result in a higher than Earth delivery charges.
“If people do eventually start to live on the moon they are going to need things to eat, obviously, and eventually they are going to get sick of eating pre-packaged food. They are going to need variety and that is likely what Domino’s is looking to fulfill. I’m sure they won’t be the only ones, but by being the first they will gain a serious foothold on the territory,” said Scrape TV Business analyst Ken Green. “If they can make it work it will likely be very successful. There will be problems, of course, and not just the cost of setting up the facility. Supplies will be an issue and so will employees. I mean it’s going to be tough to get away with paying people minimum wage if they are living on the moon. Odds are there won’t be a lot of high schools there, at least not anytime soon.”
It’s not clear if Japanese labour laws on Earth would apply to Moon-based facilities.
“The biggest issue, though, is going to be competition. The population on the Moon will be small for the first little while but everyone is going to be jumping at the chance to be the first fast food chain there. The residents, too, will want more than just pizza and so you will likely see Subway, McDonald’s, and other fast food chains setting up shop there which will erode profits and cause competition for employees,” continued Green. “Once people go to the moon they are going to want pizza, there is little doubt of that, but at least in the early days it’s going to be a serious challenge making the facility profitable. I’m sure though, considering the unique nature of the restaurant, the company will be willing to eat some of the cost.”
It’s not clear when the restaurant will open but Domino’s has already started taking applications. They are seeking mature and experienced fast food workers. Space travel experience preferred.
