I realize I've been "off the radar" for quite a lot of years now, so
it's doubtful any of your readers even have any idea who I am. I don't
even think I qualify as a celebrity anymore. But just for the record,
here is the actual statement I had given:
"Ever since I was a little girl, I have dreamed of climbing Mount
Ararat to search for Noah's Ark. This past January, after nearly dying
in the hospital, I decided to make my lifelong dream a reality. All my
preparations and heavy training for the past 12 weeks have been being
filmed for an 8-part documentary to be aired on Discovery Network (I
drew the line at including my actual climb in the documentary - only
my training and preparations for it).
However, a couple of recent events are now causing me to fear for my
personal safety. My hiking partner, Jeremy Wiles, has canceled his
trip because of recent death threats he has been receiving. He was
planning a trip to Mount Ararat to search for the body of his friend
Donald MacKenzie. Donald MacKenzie disappeared without a trace last
September while searching for Noah's Ark on Mount Ararat. Since Jeremy
and I were planning on going at the same time, I volunteered to spend
the first few days of my climb helping him look for Donald on the area
of the mountain that Donald was last known to have been searching.
When my guide, a local Kurdish man, found out that I was planning to
help search for Donald, he warned me not to, and relentlessly
attempted to talk me out of it. Then after Jeremy canceled his trip,
my guide turned on me and canceled my permit to climb when I told him
that I still intended to follow through with the search regardless.
For these reasons, I now fear for my personal safety and will not be
climbing Mount Ararat this year."
