GM ANNOUNCES PLAN TO MODIFY CHEVY VOLTS TO PREVENT SPONTANEOUS EXPLOSIONS
January 8 2012
Detroit, MI – Eventually, whether people like it or not, we are going to have transition over to new forms of energy. The simple fact of the matter is that, regardless of the environmental consequences of using fossil fuels, we are going to eventually run out. There are only so many dead dinosaurs and eventually we are going to use them all up.
There has been resistance, as there always is with major changes in the way people do things, but major companies have pushed forward, trying their best to advance that shift to new fuel technologies whether or not people like it. Sometimes that has gone well, but most of the time it has gone mediocre. There is no better example of that than the Chevy Volt.
Hailed as the revolution in electric cars, the Volt has become little better than Typhoid Mary. While the car works, it hasn’t sold and has not come even close to sparking the green revolution that many hoped it would do. Add to those sales woes technical issues and you have a perfect storm of failure for the vehicle. Now though GM has taken action to correct at least one of those issues, offering a fix for all Volts that will prevent the car from suddenly bursting into flames for no apparent reason.
“This safety enhancement is an important step in ensuring our customers that we not only stand behind our vehicles, but also behind them. The GM family is our family and we will always do what we need to do to protect that family,” the company said in statement. “This correction ill ensure that no Volts, regardless of the situation, will burst into flames without warning. That is part of our assurance to our customers.”
A number of Volts have been bursting into flames weeks after getting into accidents.
The company does still recommend not getting into accidents as the best way to prevent sudden fires, but the new fix should mitigate the issue.
It’s believed that the company will be able to repair all the vehicles sold in a few days, possibly as long as a working week.
“This is really great news not only for GM and the electric vehicle industry as a whole, but also for consumers. Not only does this reassure customers that their vehicles will
not suddenly burst into flames, it also assure them that GM hasn’t abandoned them like most were assuming they would. I mean they are driving Volts after all and the company can’t be expected to cover everything they sell,” said Scrape TV Business analyst Ken Green. “This also gives people thinking about buying the cars a good impression, knowing that the company is willing to take measures to prevent their cars from suddenly bursting into flames. That is good for the GM family and for regular families. Surprise car fires are not the kind of surprise that most people like to have, especially with a family. Now that is no longer a concern for people thinking about investing in a Volt, and in the future.”
GM will also offer replacement windows after sporadic reports of Volt glass suddenly exploding, though there will be a fee attached to that.
