J.K. ROWLING ANNOUNCES NEW HARRY POTTER WEBSITE WILL BE SPLIT INTO TEN PARTS
June 26 2011
London, U.K. – Few people who have any real background in literature would argue that the Harry Potter series is great art. There is no debating its popularity and thus its cultural impact, but it is very unlikely that anyone, even in the long distant future,
will be mistaking J.K. Rowling for Tolstoy. The books are certainly engaging and energetic, but great art they are not and it is likely they will eventually come to be regarded as being amongst the elite of pop writing.
Any critical analysis of the Potter works is really almost irrelevant. The fans will always be the fans and they will defend the works with irrational fervour well beyond what they need to be defended. After all, it doesn’t really matter if the books are great or just popular, love is love and a whole lot of people love Harry Potter. The books though are done, and in a few weeks the movies will be done, leaving many Potter fans with no outlet for their affection for the young wizards. However Rowling, who has stated that she will never write another Potter tale, has a vested interest in keeping her fans happy, something she plans do with a new social networking website that will directly engage her adoring fans. The site, called Pottermore, will be split into at least ten different parts released over a number of years.
“’ll be sharing additional information that I’ve been hoarding for years about the world

of Harry Potter. can be creative in a medium that didn’t exist back in 1990 when I started writing the books,” said Rowling upon announcing the site. “The site will allow fans to engage this universe in a whole new way. It will be a social networking system as well as venue for people to buy Harry Potter books and merchandise. I am very excited about this opportunity to continue to engage fans of Harry.”
The site will launch July 31st.
“The web is such a versatile medium that it makes sense she is trying it, trying something new, which will allow her to explore the Harry Potter world in a whole new way. It’s become fairly obvious that this is all she has and so she’s going to want to continue this universe as long as possible. She certainly isn’t hurting for money, but artists don’t create for money, they do it for acclaim,” said Scrape TV Literary analyst Samuel Lee. “Eventually her fans are going to start having kids and even with new Potter works they were already going to start turning away. With no new material coming that was only going to be exacerbated and eventually it would mean that Harry and his pals would just be forgotten, left to history, and for a creator that is the worst thing that can happen.”
The final film instalment will be released on July 15.
“This site will allow fans to continue to engage the world and eventually pass it onto their children. Of course like most websites they will eventually forget and do something else, which is why this idea of releasing the site in stages is really quite brilliant. Not sure how it’s going to work, but if it does it should sustain fandom for awhile to come,” continued Lee. “After all, it’s always about what comes next. With this kind of pop world the whole point is reading or watching in order to get to the next story and since those have come to an end you have to keep up the energy. By splitting the site into multiple parts you can keep up that anticipation and fandom for a long time to come.”
Rowling has hinted that a new website may be launched after this one is completed.
