PG&E DOING IT’S BEST TO NOT BLOW EVERYONE UP

September 29 2011

San Francisco, CA – Corporate responsibility in terms of public safety has always been a particularly grey area. The debate over regulation often leaves the people in the middle of the debate between greedy corporations and, well, themselves. After all, the principal obligation of any company is to make money and usually they will have no concern about running over people to do that.explosion

Often those things are overlooked but occasionally incidents occur that are simply too big to cover up and cause massive public outrage, think Bhopal or British Petroleum. Such outrage has not happened in San Francisco yet, despite the multiple massive explosions that have been happening throughout the area, and if Pacific Gas & Electric has its way that will remain the case. They are, after all, doing all they can to not blow absolutely everyone up.

“We fully embrace the recommendations of the NTSB and will incorporate them into our plans. The board is deeply sorry that our pipeline was the cause of the accident,” PG&E’s President said of a September 2010 explosion in San Bruno. That incident killed 8 people.

The company has had other, less deadly explosions in recent years as well but has vowed to cut down on them in the future.

“The company really does believe that preventing explosions in neighbourhoods is a good thing, not only good for the communities but more importantly good for explosion cloud
business. Let’s face it, dead people don’t pay electricity bills and that is the last thing anyone here wants,” said an insider with the company. “It’s going to happen again in the future, there are old pipelines all over the place and our workers just aren’t all that careful, but we would like to change. It’s the best thing for everyone if we can get these deaths and explosions under control. Eventually they will start to hurt our reputation.”

The NTSB found PG&E responsible for the San Bruno explosion and that they had lied about their procedures in dealing with the aging pipelines.

“Generally it’s not a good idea for companies to kill their customers or to blow up their houses. That tends to shake people’s faith in the company and also makes it tough to justify paying bills, in this case. It’s good that they have taken responsibility, good for the people and houses of San Francisco as well as the shareholders,” said Scrape TV Business analyst Ken Green. “Energy companies have no vested interest in blowing people up. Things perhaps but not people. It’s just not good business and I think we can take them at their word that they are trying their hardest to ensure that it doesn’t happen anymore.”

The company was also criticized for pursuing legal action against people who had their houses blown up for non-payment of bills. They later dropped the suits after finding that mail boxes had also been detonated in the area.atomic explosion

“There is always going to be risk in this area because the pipelines are aging and they really don’t do a very good job of assessing their strength or durability. Those are things you need to pay attention to, that type of negligence is the type of thing that tends to cause these types of explosions,” continued Green. “It appears now, though, that they have been humbled and will make a concerted effort to stop blowing people up. Hopefully that attitude sticks.”

The company hasn’t blown anything up since the San Bruno explosion.
