POTENTIAL TRAVELLERS LASH OUT AT NEW MARTIAN BAGGAGE FEES
August 8 2011
Washington, D.C. – There has been no object in our solar system which has created quite as much fascination as the red planet. True, the moon and the sun have both been more important to human beings over the years, but it is Mars which creates real fascination, awe, and mystery.
Slowly, we are unlocking the secrets of that planet and finding it even more interesting and compelling than we ever could have imagined, even if little green men don’t inhabit her rolling red hills. Inevitably, our intrigue with Mars will lead us to that planet, both in the name of science and in the name of travel and already plans to begin start the colonization of the planet have begun.
There is still much to learn about Mars and checking into the Martian Hilton is still many years away, but already people have started to plan, and complain about, those future trips. Chief amongst those complaints is the massive cost associated with travel, upwards of $1000 a pound at current rates which makes travel to the red planet easily the most costly of vacations. However, it is not the base price that is concerning travellers and now regulators, it is the issue of additional costs which has started to become the issue.
“We are concerned that we will see gouging, particularly in the realm of baggage fees.
We are in an uncomfortable relationship with those types of fees in respect to air
travel, but it is going to be a whole new issue once space travel becomes more common,” said one legislator. “We want to ensure that there is clarity and rationality here, that travellers aren’t being hit with hidden fees or surprises at the spaceport. Those things aren’t good for travellers or for the industry.”
It’s believed likely that obese customers will have to pay double because of extra fuel required for liftoff.
“We understand the need for airlines to save and to make money but we don’t want them doing that at the expense of customer satisfaction, nor do we want them struggling which could cause safety procedures to go unchecked. We need to find a rational balance for all inter-solar flights,” continued the legislator. “The space industry is not going to be unlike the air industry. We will not allow them to fly unchecked and unregulated, but of course we don’t want too much of that because that can also cause costs to rise. We will find a balance.”
Ordinary travellers, though, are still finding the issue a potent one.
“I for one don’t want to hear doubletalk or politicians using this as a platform. If I want to travel to Mars I should be able to do so without being fleeced. We already pay far too much on domestic travel and it is the add-ons, the additional fees which really cause the problem. Eliminate those and we can have peace,” said one D.C. area resident. “I have already started to plan a family trip to Mars, to Ismenian Lake in particular and I need to know how much I have to save. Not just the ticket price but all these other costs. Once that is sorted then I can really start to plan. Get it right politicians.”
It’s believed likely that carry-ons will be free of surcharges.
