RONALD MCDONALD BLOWS OFF CALLS TO RETIRE

May 22 2011

Oak Brook, IL – Retirement is an odd thing. So sought after by so many people for most of their working lives, when it actually comes about many people have a difficult time accepting it and integrating into their new lives. Often that results in people retiree
delaying said retirement or even getting part time jobs to fill in the gaps in their day, regardless of whether or not they need the money. Something which is so lusted after is something which few can ultimately accept.

Retirement though isn’t simply a personal decision. There are after all new generations of workers coming through the system who benefit from retirees making retirement a necessary component of the ecosystem of the workplace. Still, some people are just unwilling to go quietly into retirement, hanging on with every scrap of their being. That is very much the case with Ronald McDonald who has, for nearly fifty years, acted as the spokesperson for the fast food chain which bears his name. His presence has become a more than a comfort, it has become an icon for the restaurants, something which has continued into the modern day. However, not everyone is happy with Ronald and his longevity with many now calling on the face of the restaurants to step aside and gracefully retire, something McDonald is apparently not willing to do.

“McDonald's cares about kids. We are committed to responsible advertising and take our communications to children very seriously. We understand the importance of children's health and nutrition, and are committed to being part of the dialogue and ronald mcdonald
solution,” the chain wrote in response to critics. “We serve high quality food, and our Happy Meals offer choice and variety in portions just for kids. Parents tell us they appreciate our Happy Meal choices. As the face of Ronald McDonald House Charities, Ronald is an ambassador for good and delivers important messages to kids on safety, literacy and balanced, active lifestyles. We are happy to continue working with Mr. McDonald now and in the future.”

In particular, the Corporate Accountability International, a non-profit organization based in Washington, has called for the mandatory retirement of the icon.

“There are few corporate faces which would be difficult to replace and even fewer which would be impossible, but McDonald is certainly one of those. Certainly when someone like Steve Jobs steps down it will harm his company, but not to the same degree as would happen with McDonald. He is as irreplaceable as you can get,” said
Scrape TV Business analyst Ken Green. “For decades he has entertained children and brought them into the restaurants, which in turn has made them incredibly successful. ronald mcdonald waving
By getting to children at an early age they create adults who eat at their restaurants, who in turn bring their children and the cycle continues. Without McDonald that would be lost and that would be incredibly damaging to the company and their fortunes.”

McDonald has served as spokesperson for the company since 1963.

“Eventually he will have to retire of course. No one can work forever and eventually the pace of the work will catch up to him but that doesn’t seem to be happening anytime soon. One day though, one day he will make room for another clown to take his place,” continued Green. “That will be a sad day to be sure, but hopefully he will step down before he loses his dignity, before it becomes embarrassing. Still, hopefully he goes out on his own terms.”

McDonald had no comment.
