THE POPE TAKES ON THE MAFIA, PASTA SPAGHETTI LINGUINI, IN SICILY

Lamezia Terme, Italy – For centuries, Popes have been getting themselves caught up with the wrong people. Usually they could get away with it because, well because they are the Pope but that is not the case any longer. In a modern world far less interested in following the rule of the Church, the power of the Pontiff has been reduced dramatically and that in turn has exposed many of the indiscretions of the Catholic powers.
While many may have been worse, it is the current Pope, Benedict XVI, who has had to deal with the bulk of that backlash. Whether as a result of his work with the Hitler Youth or his pardoning and protection of Priests who abused children, Pope Benedict has had little but controversy in his time in the top job. Now the Pope may have gone one step too far, travelling to southern Italy and criticizing the much beloved Mafia in the region, raising the ire of locals and local power brokers alike.
“Force yourselves to grow in the ability to collaborate with one another, care for one another and all the public good,” the Pope said to a crowd of 40,000 before going on to criticize the powerful mafia presence in the area, specifically the 'ndrangheta mob which runs the area. He went on to call them inhuman, something the mob itself hasn’t taken to very kindly.
“God Bless the Pope, but this is business here and this is our business and we aren’t interested in dealing with this types of incidents,” said a local mafia spokesperson. “If the Pope wants to discuss our business practices he can come here and discuss it with us rather than talking about us. We are always interested in conversation and we can even make it worth his while.”
The Vatican has not made any plans for the Pope to meet with local members of the mob. It’s not clear if Benedict would even know to whom he was talking even if they did.
“It is great that the Pope he come visit here and he talk to the people. We needa the Pope in this area we are so happy that he a come to visit us here in the south. I coulda never argue with the Pope but he is not always right. Things are great here in the south and we are all very happy,” said Luigi, a local. “Boppididy Bop, pasta linguini. We are so happy here in the south, so happy that the Pope he comea here to visit us and so happy with life the way it is here. It’sa great time to be living here in the south, itsa great time to be Sicilian.”
Luigi offered the Pope a genuine Italian meal. It’s not clear if he was taken up on the offer.
“Hopefully this isn’t one of those situations where the Pope sticks his foot in his mouth. I mean the mob hasn’t been above taking out a Pope every now and then and if he has really offended them, well this could very well be the last time he does something like this,” said Scrape TV Religion analyst Bertram Gas. “No one wants to Pope to end up dead, well the mob might, but no one else really. Well the sex abuse victims maybe, but no one else. Possibly the Jews and the atheists and the Muslims, but no one else really. Hopefully for everyone but those people’s sake it doesn’t happen.”
The Pope went to sleep shortly after the talk.
