THE POPE’S FAILING HEALTH A CONCERN FOR PRIESTS DOING EXTRACURRICULAR WORK
December 19 2011
Vatican City – The Pope is dying. Well, eventually anyway. The Pope, just like everyone else, is not immune to the ravages of time and stress and in his job, well the stress can be a big deal. That, alongside his advancing age and very obvious signs of growing ill health, have generated concerns about how much longer the Pontiff has in this earthly realm, and of course how things will change when he is gone.
As the spokesperson, ostensibly, for the faith of more than a billion people, the health and well-being of the Pope is very important indeed. Recent images of him using a mobile platform rather than walking, and according to reports, too weak to meet with visitors the health of the Pope is very much a concern for all of those who look to him for guidance and salvation.
Of particular concern is the status of priests across the world, many of whom have benefited directly from the Pope and his actions, particularly in respect to their extracurricular activities, something this particular Pope has always been steadfast in protecting. Now, with the real possibility of a new Pope shortly, many are concerned that such outside actions may not be as protected as they once were.
“Indeed I was struck by what appeared to me as the decline in Benedict's strength and health over the last half year. He looks thinner and weaker ... which made the effort he put into the Assisi shindig with the extraordinary degree of personal attention to the attendees all the more remarkable,” Rabbi David Rosen told the Associated Press after seeing the Pope at a recent conference.
Many are further concerned about the health of the Pope in the busy Christmas season, again especially those with a great deal invested in extracurricular work.
It’s not yet clear who the front runner for the next Pope is, nor if he will be as tolerant of the division of focus Benedict has supported.
“The Pope certainly doesn’t look good but he surges every now and then. It could just be that he is worn down from his work schedule. It could also be that he is ill and that the end is near. This really, no matter how much longer he lives, is a reminder that he will be gone and we simply don’t know what the future holds,” said Scrape TV Religion analyst Bertram Gas. “People need to prepare for that as much as possible and priests in particular are going to have to accept that things are going to change, at least a little bit, and that they simply won’t have the same kind of free pass they have had for so many years. They are going to have to adapt.”
It’s not clear if Benedict is working to make any possible transition easier for his priests.
“All of this extra work, this stuff outside the regular work of the priests, it has been a very important thing for Benedict since his earliest days but eventually a new generation will come in, well slightly new, and the patience for that likely won’t be the same and that means change,” continued Gas. “Frankly, some of them should consider stopping with that work, just to be safe. Once the new guy comes in they will have a better picture of where things stand and they can move forward from there, but it’s better safe than sorry.”
Benedict has made any public comment on his health, or any new restrictions for his priests.
