WALMART MAY RECONSIDER SALE OF BATS AFTER GIRL IS BITTEN
September 3 2011
North Branch, MN – Walmart has long been a controversial retailer, accused of encouraging sweat shops, running small businesses out of towns, and offering low wages and benefits to employees. The company, though, has also become massive despite those issues precisely because they do these things, which allows them to offer wide selection at low prices.
There are no protests outsides Wal-Mart locations, no national outrage over the sketchy business practices, precisely because they offer value and selection to their customers. Sometimes, though, even Walmart can go too far and that may have happened at a location in Minnesota.
It was there where a 5-year old girl was bitten by a bat while visiting the location with her family, a result of new trial being conducted at the store which would see rodents sold at all Walmart, a plan which now may be on the ropes following the incident.
“She was sitting in the child part of the cart, minding her own business. The bat flew down the pizza aisle, flew back at us, flew down and landed on her, attacking her and bit her leg,” said the girl’s mother. “She had a series of three shots for rabies.”
The location assured the family that all the bats had been tested for rabies, but the family decided on preventative shots anyways.
“This is certainly an unusual situation. Bats are not prone to biting people, believe it or not, and that alone could indicate that there is something wrong with the animal. It makes sense, in the absence of being able to test the bat, to get the shots. Just in case,” said Scrape TV Health analyst Rebecca Phelps. “It’s really an unfortunate situation. This little girl just doesn’t know what’s going on really, and rabies shots are not nice, not at all. It’s also really unfortunate that this may mean the end of bat sales for the company.”
The bats were apparently imported from China, but Walmart claims they were all healthy and tested. The company has declined comment on the incident.
“I mean in any business they are going to try things that just don’t work out, but normally when that happens the product doesn’t turn around and attack children. Normally they just go back to the distributor or the company takes a write down and destroys it. This is a little more complicated and may open them up to a lawsuit,” continued Phelps. “If nothing else, it means that they will likely not carry flying rodents in any of their stores. This has to be a big failure for them, and all because they were negligent in even the most basic of health and safety protocols. It’s a bad day for this family, but it’s an even worse day for all the potential bat buyers out there. Now they will have to pay far more for their flying mammals and no one likes that.”
In related news, the company has also pulled a line of buffalo-meat patties from the same location citing low sales.
