GEORGE LUCAS DEVELOPING TIME MACHINE TO FIX ISSUES WITH 1988 SELF
September 6 2011
San Francisco, CA – ‘Star Wars’ belongs to the people, or at least the people would like to believe that is the case. The series, at least the original, has become so ingrained in pop culture and the personal identities of many that they feel it belongs to them in some fundamental way, and that any alteration to the work is effectively sacrilege.
Of course not everyone feels that way, and the most important of those people is the person who actually owns the movies, George Lucas. Since he began making changes more than a decade ago fans have railed against Lucas, accused him of blasphemous behaviour and of destroying their childhood by altering the films, but he has continued unabated. Lucas has become the poster boy for changing his work, something he actively protested back in 1988, the latter of which has come back to haunt him of late.
At issue are new changes to the original films for their upcoming Blu-ray release which has angered fans and fan boys alike, particularly with the revelation of document from 1988 in which the man himself railed against the alteration of artistic works. Now Lucas, with his massive wealth and mad genius qualities, Lucas is apparently attempting to develop a time machine and rewrite that incriminating document forever.
“American works of art belong to the American public; they are part of our cultural history. People who alter or destroy works of art and our cultural heritage for profit or as an exercise of power are barbarians... Today, engineers with their computers can add color to black-and-white movies, change the soundtrack, speed up the pace, and add or subtract material to the philosophical tastes of the copyright holder,” read the treatise in part. “ Tomorrow, more advanced technology will be able to replace actors with "fresher faces," or alter dialogue and change the movement of the actor's lips to match There is nothing to stop American films, records, books, and paintings from being sold to a foreign entity or egotistical gangsters and having them change our cultural heritage to suit their personal taste.”
Lucas has not commented publicly on the document, but insiders indicate that he is not at all happy with its sudden reappearance.
“George is a lot more sensitive than most people would like to believe. He understands the attachment people have to the films and he is very pleased that they are so passionate about them, that they feel so much ownership over them, but he has a vision and he want to make that a reality. Sometimes things just don’t work out for everyone,” said a Lucasfilm insider. “When wrote that out he was actually referring to governments or businesses which would alter art for propaganda purposes more than anything, but he does see how people could attach it to him now. The statement really does go both ways. That’s why he’s decided to change that, to rectify that mistake. He’s done it so many times before that one more change won’t really matter. It’s just a matter of getting the damn machine to work properly. That’s been a bit of a challenge.”
The insider refused to give his name for fear of being altered himself.
