KATY PERRY HAVING TROUBLE GETTING TICKETS TO HER OWN CONCERTS
May 23 2011
Los Angeles, CA – A few years ago no one had heard of Katy Perry. At 24-years old, working in an industry that thrives on youth, it was entirely possible that the wannabe pop singer was about to be passed over, and then came the summer of 2008. The
massive success of ‘I Kissed a Girl’ vaulted Perry to the top of the charts and the tip of everyone’s lips. The success of that song, which seemed to on forever, gave her the chance that so few people ever get.
It could very well have been a one hit wonder, that song, which people would remember fondly as the song of that summer, but Perry had other plans. Cashing in on her sex appeal and her ability pound out pop tune after pop tune, Perry and her management parlayed the success of that song into a career not of a also-ran but of a pop queen. Now, headlining sell-out tours all across the world, Perry has become one of the major voices of a generation and the success she the likes of which she could only have dreamt. That has made Perry wealthy and powerful, but as she is quickly discovering, that does not mean she can do anything she wants. Amidst the recent deportation of husband Russell Bran from Japan, Perry has apparently also found great difficulty in getting tickets for her own shows, prompting the singer to secure guarantees that she will be able to buy and sell as many tickets as she wants to her own shows, at least according to her show rider.
“If Company elects to use “Resellers”, Promoter shall hold tickets for each Performance, in quantities and in locations as designated by the Personal Manager, for distribution to the public through “Resellers”. “Resellers” shall mean any ticket agency, ticket re-seller or other so-called “secondary market” seller of tickets (such as, by way of example only, StubHub in the United States) who sell tickets to the general public. Promoter expressly acknowledges and agrees that Company shall be entitled to retain, for Company’s sole account, such portion of the proceeds from sales by Resellers.”
Secondary sales for Perry tickets are upwards of $450 dollars, compared to $57.50 for primary sale prices.
“Essentially, this clause means that Perry and her management is able to secure tickets for their own uses before they are sold to the general public. Most of those would likely be used for VIP’s and friends and family members, but more and more frequently the financial benefits are becoming a motivating factor,” said Scrape TV Music analyst Dylan Chambers. “The truth is that the bulk of a music artist’s money comes from tours, not record sales, and it is a variable revenue stream, meaning that it can be affected more dramatically by external factors. Of course it could also mean that she is running low on cash.”
The rider also states other requirements including floral arrangements and lack of conversation with hired help.
“I suppose part of the logic is that this allows them to keep profits out of the pockets of scalpers and back in theirs, but it could also be that things are a little rougher out there on the touring scene than people would like to believe,” continued Chambers. “It isn’t just music which has declined, its music itself. There are so many other options out there and artists who would have played to 50,000 people are now playing to 20,000. It’s a hard life out there and you can’t blame people like Perry when they try and grab every dollar they can. After all, they won’t be around forever. If she can make a few extra bucks scalping tickets, well all power to her. They are her tickets after all.”
Perry also apparently took out a second mortgage on her Los Angeles home last month.
