MARVEL SCHEDULES AVENGERS SEQUEL TWO WEEKS BEFORE RELEASE OF THE FIRST FILM
August 16 2011
Hollywood, CA – Years before a cast was in place or a script even talked about, there is no doubt that the executives at Marvel had been planning a film franchise around ‘The Avengers’. The set up has been massive, perhaps the most ambitious in movie history, spanning multiple characters and a half dozen movies and now we are less than a year away from seeing the Avengers assemble in theatres.
As much talk as there has been about the upcoming film, Marvel has been looking beyond and thinking about the future of the series and now, in an incredible act of confidence, has apparently scheduled the sequel to ‘The Avengers’ for two weeks before the release of the first film in the series.
“We are thrilled with the way people have reacted so far and that has given us a great deal of confidence in moving ahead with the sequel. Planning ahead is what we do well and we aren’t going to pull back now,” said a Marvel insider. “We are looking at April 20th for the second film which will continue the story of the first film. We think that by having this one-two punch we will really be able to do magical things and make for an exciting summer 2012. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”
The first movie is currently filming in New Mexico. It’s not yet clear if the second film has already been filmed or if the two productions are running concurrently.
“Sequels are a big thing right now. Well, they’ve always been a big thing really but it

has become a different beast in today’s film world. It only makes sense that there would be multiple movies in this particular franchise but this is a little ambitious,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “Marvel has done a great job in planning this franchise out and been really bold in making it happen, but this goes a little beyond the pall. It is possible that by doing this they could cannibalize their own product.”
‘The Avengers 2’ had been scheduled for 2014.
“I think they may be pushing a little too far this time. I think it is possible that they will potentially sour their audience by asking them to pay so quick in succession. Sometimes less is more even when it comes to superheroes,” continued Temple. “However, they have presumably done their research and they know their audience and if this does work it could very well set a standard for new releases going forward.”
The studio also has future plans for all the individual characters in ‘The Avengers’ films, most of which will now come after the release of those pictures.
“We think people will be really pleased with both movies. We hope they will come out to support the projects because we do have more stories to tell and if fan response is what we think it will be we will put those stories on screen,” continued the Marvel insider. “We could end up going like the comic, releasing an Avengers movie every month. That would be the dream but we will have to see how these two movies do before we try something like that.”
Reached for comment, a representative for Disney told us not to get ahead of ourselves.
