OPRAH FINALLY GETS LONG DESERVED OSCAR RECOGNITION
August 7 2011
Los Angeles, CA – Oprah Winfrey is finally getting her Oscar. 25 years after her first nomination the former Queen of daytime talk is finally getting the Academy recognition so many people feel she is owed, albeit in the form of an honorary award.
At next year’s Oscar telecast Winfrey, 57, will receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, capping a two decades long quest for Oscar gold.
“We are thrilled that Oprah will be joining the long legacy of recipients,” said an Academy spokesperson. “This award is a statement on Winfrey’s contribution to the movie industry but also to her work as a humanitarian and all around generous person. We are thrilled to welcome her into this illustrious company.”
Winfrey has been credited on five movies and given a bunch of cars to audience members.
“Ms. Winfrey is very pleased to accept this great honour. It was always her dream as a little girl to have a Oscar and now she will finally have one to call her own. She feels that this is really an acknowledgement of the hard work she has done over the years and she is thrilled,” said a spokesperson for Harpo, Winfrey’s production company. “It has been a long, winding, and hard road to this day but she is thrilled that it has finally arrived. All that hard work has finally paid off and she is very excited. She feels very gratified that she is being recognized.”
It’s not clear yet which of her dozen homes the award will be kept.
“On the surface it doesn’t really seem like Winfrey should be receiving any kind of award from the Academy. I mean she has hardly worked in film and her most significant work was a long time ago, and even that isn’t exactly legendary but there are other factors,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “It will most certainly bring people to the show, which didn’t do very well last year and that is a good thing. More importantly though it could inspire young people to grow up, to get their own TV shows, and to become billionaires. Her story will finally be played out for the public and it’s an inspiring one, and inspiring stories is what Hollywood is all about.”
Producers are apparently considering moving the 2012 show into Oprah’s living room which would make it easier for her and provide more seating than the Kodak Theatre.
“It really is about time that she is receiving this recognition. Far too many people go
without Oscars, deserving people, people who should have received these awards years ago. Finally though she will get one while she can still appreciate it and that is a good thing,” continued Temple. “Yes it would be nice if she received the award for an actual accomplishment, like say they were to introduce a best TV show host of the last twenty-five years category but this is something and something is usually better than nothing. Good for Oprah and good on the Academy.”
Winfrey has apparently already contracted workers in China to spin new silk strands for her Oscar gown.
