CEE LO GREEN OUTRAGES JOHN LENNON FANS BY CHANGING LYRICS TO HIS COMMIE ATHEIST SONG

January 2 2012

New York, NY – When an artist dies, particularly a music artist, their legend tends to grow to ridiculous levels, far beyond anything that they would have gained had they lived. For many death is the best thing to happen to their career, with no fat years and mediocre music ever touching the legends of people like Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, or Kurt Cobain.john lennon young

Or John Lennon, perhaps the greatest of all dead musical icons.

In reality there was nothing in Lennon’s catalogue that would have pushed him to higher levels of greatness. While his work with The Beatles is certainly beloved and respected, the heights he reached with them was likely his creative nadir. His solo career was, at best, underwhelming, removed from the creative and musical synergy created in that band. While he did have success as a solo artist, few will debate that much of that had to do with his name rather than his music. Ultimately though that music is revered, kept sealed in a glass mausoleum because of his death, safe from a long career that would have produced mediocrity and tours of local casinos.

Whatever the reason, Lennon is legend and his music is revered, something Cee Lo Green found out the hard way when he changed a lyric to Lennon’s most famous tune, ‘Imagine’ raising the ire of dozens of fans who really, really believe they like John Lennon’s music for its own sake.cee lo green

“Yo I meant no disrespect by changing the lyric guys! I was trying to say a world were u could believe what u wanted that's all,” Green tweeted following the really, really passionate outrage.

Green changed the lyric ‘...and no religion too’ to ‘...and all religions true’ which the passionate fans saw as a deep offence to the Lord Lennon, particularly his socialist and atheistic leanings.

Lennon died at the age of 40. Relatively slim still and far from having to play old Beatles songs in concert or make big bucks on the Casino circuit.

“I can certainly see how some people would be offended by the change, especially when you don’t really think about it. I mean passionate fans obviously, I can’t imagine, so-to-speak, that most people would actually care. I mean it is just a song not a philosophy. In fact, if you feel that Lennon was actually arguing against religion, then Cee Lo was exactly right in changing things, breaking up the religion of Lennon,” said Scrape TV Music analyst Dylan Chambers. “I doubt that most people really thought of it that way, though, and were just reacting to this song they loved being changed a little bit on a performance no one saw and most were too drunk to even properly comprehend.”john lennon imagine

Green gave the performance during NBC’s Times Square New Year celebration.

“I mean it’s great that people still have that spirit of protest that Lennon showed, willing to step out and say what they think and feel when something isn’t right. They thought the change wasnt right, that the word of Lennon should not be changed, and they made that clear to Green, and that is a good thing,” continued Chambers. “I’m sure people won’t remember that protest in quite the same way as they remember Lennon’s, but it’s still nice. Very nice indeed. I’m sure Green will think twice about having his own opinion now, mission accomplished.”

Reached for comment, Paul McCartney was too busy playing old Beatles songs to discuss the controversy. No one tried to get a hold of Ringo Starr.
