DAVID LETTERMAN EXTORTIONIST RETURNS TO PRODUCING AND EXTORTION
December 31 2011
New York, NY – It was a mild controversy and one, that if it had been played out amongst regular people, would not have even made local newscasts but because of the people involved, the David Letterman extortion scandal became a very big deal indeed.
While Letterman is certainly far from his height of popularity, he is still a well-known name and face and because of the unseemly nature of the extortion, an ongoing affair with a younger assistant, the controversy became a big deal. Now the person who sparked that controversy, extortionist and producer Joe Halderman, is back in a big way.
Free from legal troubles, Halderman will mark his return to television with ‘On the Case with Paula Zahn’, which will follow the former CNN star across the country as she interviews people on a variety of subjects, most of whom will be forced to reveal all under threat of salacious personal details being revealed to the world.
“With the network’s prior approval, the team has brought Halderman on as a producer for On the Case. We are confident that Halderman will make significant

contributions to the success of our award-winning investigative newsmagazine,” said producer Scott Weinberg. “On behalf of On the Case’s production team, we have been impressed with Joe Halderman’s professional accomplishments as an Emmy Award-winning producer for 48 Hours and CBS News.”
It’s not clear if Halderman had something on the producers and studio executives, or possibly on Paula Zahn herself, but it’s likely.
Zahn recently cancelled an appearance on Letterman’s program to promote her new show, though it’s believed unlikely that was tied to Halderman’s presence.
“This was really an exciting case, a fun time, almost as good as the Leno-O’Brien thing a few months later. Late night TV has been pretty lame in recent years with really not much happening. At one time, it was where things were at, but now it’s just one more ship in the vast ocean of television signals, unfortunately,” said Scrape TV Media analyst Sarah Piper. “This controversy spiced that up and brought a lot of attention to Letterman and the
whole genre. As bad as it was personally, it was really great for a tired TV format. Hopefully Halderman can bring that to reality TV as well.”
It’s not clear what Zahn has and on whom that allowed her to get a new show
“I mean he’s already got a good start. No one, and I mean no one would be talking about a new Paula Zahn show if it wasn’t for him being on board so already its done good things for them. We can’t be sure that’s the reason he’s on board, I mean surely he had something on them, but it’s still a net benefit,” continued Piper. “I mean the whole thing isn’t going to end well, obviously, but it was never going to anyway. At least this way some people will be able to make a little bit of money, including Halderman this time around.”
It’s not clear how much money Halderman got out of the producers this time around.
