FORMER PERSONAL ASSISTANT SUES LADY GAGA FOR MAKING HER DO WORK
December 26 2011
Los Angeles, CA – There is no doubt in anyone’s mind that being a personal assistant to and eccentric pop star has to be a tough job at times. Still, doing things like fetching coffee and dry cleaning, which is all personal assistant’s really do, getting paid really well, and travelling the world even for someone like Gaga can’t be all that tough of a job.
Or maybe it can be, at least according to one former assistant for Gaga who is now suing the singer for unpaid overtime, thousands of hours of overtime actually.
In the suit, Jennifer O’Neill claims that her work, which included tending to Gaga’s personal needs on private planes, yachts, and backstage at stadiums, included such strenuous tasks as waking up the singer and ensuring she had clean towels after a shower, at all hours of the day. O’Neill is now suing the singer for $380,000, amounting to 7168 hours of overtime in which she had to do all kinds of things for the singer she just didn’t want to do.
“The demands of living and working on the road are much greater than most people can imagine. Having to gather dry cleaning, especially with the type of clothing Gaga wear, at all hours of the day. Getting her water bottle after water bottle and having to waken her. Gaga is not a pleasant person in the morning, waking her alone accounted for a huge amount of extra time Ms. O’Neil had to put in,” said a lawyer for the assistant. “These small tasks may not seem like much, but the more time she has to spend waking Gaga up, the less time she had to pick up dry cleaning, and it just went on and on until she was working all the time, which is not what life on the road should be. That is why my client is seeking compensation.”
The lawyer added that O’Neil would also like to try and prevent future assistants from having to do these types of tasks for Gaga.
A rep for the singer told the New York Post that the suit is “completely without merit.”
“Gaga sure does seem strange and while much of that is probably just her stage persona, a big chunk of it is probably accurate. She likely doesn’t bathe in blood,
that’s a little too dramatic to be real, but big stars like her can be demanding and can create a very stressful life for the people around them. That is part of the gig, putting up with the star. That’s part of what you get paid for, well that and getting them clean towels and laundry,” said Scrape TV Music analyst Dylan Chambers. “I doubt it will go anywhere in the courts. She will probably get a payout of some kind, but her career as a personal assistant is likely over. Generally stars don’t like being sued, and they like their assistants to just do their work without so much complaining. Maybe if she started working for somebody a little less demanding she might have a better time. Maybe Neil Sedaka, or Elvis. I’m sure they won’t expect her to do much work.”
O’Neil also reportedly sued another former employer in the past, getting a settlement from McDonald’s for grease exposure.
