GEORGE LUCAS IRRITATES NEIGHBOURS BY CONTINUING TO MAKE MOVIES
January 21 2012
San Rafael, CA – Just a few days ago the film world was abuzz with word that George Lucas was leaving filmmaking, possibly for good. The majority of that talk was almost celebratory, Lucas having alienated so many dedicated fans over the years, though few expected it was anything other than a promotional stunt for his newest movie, ‘Red Tails’, which was released this Friday.
The passionately negative response generated by Lucas’ comments was presumed to be from a small group of people, fanboys as they are called. Still smarting all these years later over Lucas’ consistent tinkering with his legendary ‘Star Wars’ franchise, tinkering which continues next month with the 3-D release of the first film in the series, which undoubtedly they will attend, the fanboys were apoplectic with glee. However it appears that it isn’t just devotees that are against Lucas making more movies.
At the same time Lucas was promising to leave big-budget filmmaking he was moving ahead with a massive studio complex near his home in Marin County, something which is drawing outrage from locals both because of the possible disruption it could cause their community, and because they were convinced that Lucas was serious this time, and that even they wanted him to stop making crummy movies.
“I don’t have any objection to a person being rich and famous and doing well, and George Lucas has done a lot of good things for the county. I think this is a particularly bad choice. I think that they justified it because it was ‘jobs, jobs, jobs,’ which justifies almost anything these days,” said local Joy Dahlgren, echoing a sentiment shared by most of her neighbours, Lucas aside obviously.
The massive facility would house three soundstages, a 250-car parking garage, and a general store, and multiple houses all of which would likely be used to either mess with the Star Wars movies some more, or make rebellious movies that studios just don’t want to release like ‘Red Tails’.
Despite the opposition, Lucas has reportedly been seen floating across the area in his floating skiff. It’s not clear if he will eventually send his people after the complainers and turn them into slaves, though that remains a possibility.
“When Lucas first talked about leaving film it seemed a little disingenuous. I mean he is a billionaire who can make absolutely any movie he wants, heck he could make a ten-hour movie showing his money if he wanted, complaining about the difficulties of getting movies made. Pouty billionaires are not really in vogue in today’s world, and that could have been part of what inspired the negative response towards him,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “Now though it appears that there is something else at work here and that maybe the response was genuine, that maybe the whole world wants him to stop making movies. Building this facility doesn’t seem to be in keeping with that promise but the objections, well, the objections show that no one, not even his neighbours, want George Lucas to make movies anymore. Maybe he should listen to them, though he would probably just stomp his feet or tail or whatever and float away.”
Various shady people have been spotted in the complaining neighbourhood and a local facility reportedly just received an order for hundreds of pounds of liquid carbonite from Lucasfilm.
