LADY GAGA MAY BECOME OFFICIAL PRESIDENTIAL ADVISOR ON BULLYING
September 26 2011
Washington, D.C. – For most people the schoolyard bully is just a part of growing up. Bullies exist throughout the world, in schools, at work, and just in life in general. As we get older we deal with being bullied much more readily, steeled by years of
experience, but the bully himself never goes away, and never will.
Unless of course Lady Gaga gets involved, which is exactly what she has decided to do.
The First Lady of pop music has scheduled a meeting with President Obama following the bullying death of a fan. That incident, in which 14-year old Jamey Rodermeyer committed suicide after years of bullying, has prompted outrage from the singer who has now taken her fight to Washington. Gaga has now secured a conversation with the President and will possibly work as an advisor to help end bullying across the country, and apparently hoping that Obama will make it a central point of his upcoming political campaign.
“The past days I've spent reflecting, crying, and yelling. I have so much anger. It is hard to feel love when cruelty takes someone's life. Bullying must become be illegal. It is a hate crime,” Gaga wrote on her Twitter page which apparently caught the attention of the President who has been a follower of the singer for a number of years.
“I am meeting with our president. I will not stop fighting,” she said later.
Thus far, there has been no official confirmation of the meeting, or a date set.
“I think it’s going to be a tough political sell to the public. Unfortunately, most people just don’t take bullying all that seriously. They endured it themselves and the attitude is to just suck it up. That makes the fight very tough, and makes it even harder for Obama to bring it into the public realm,” said Scrape TV Political analyst Gabriel Kinsey. “Of course with Gaga making a play it could be something else entirely. She has a lot of fans and she gets a lot of attention and that alone could make it a national issue. After all, a person died. If that isn’t cause for making it a national issue I don’t know what is.”
While Rodermeyer was said to be fan, it’s not clear how much of Gaga’s music he actually purchased. However, he has been to a number of her concerts.
“Obviously Gaga has a vested interest in keeping people alive. Unfortunately young people are bullied because they are different, or because they aren’t, or for no reason at all but being different is one of those reasons. Being gay, which this young man was, will bring bullying amongst younger people and if suicides continue, it will certainly erode her fan base. In many ways it just becomes another lobby,” continued Kinsey. “However, as much money and influence as Gaga has in the public realm it is nothing compared to what other lobby groups in D.C. have. I think she will be in for a battle when she realizes the scope of things in D.C. and that will make it a tough go for her, no matter how passionate about she is.”
Gaga is also trying to meet with Republican candidates about the issue. Only Ron Paul, who usually has few people to talk to, has agreed to meet with her.
