ONLINE VOTING FOR OSCARS MAY ALLOW HACKERS TO GIVE SANDRA BULLOCK ANOTHER WIN
February 4 2012
Los Angeles, CA – Everyone cinephile, almost to a tee, thinks that the Academy Awards are a joke. It’s easy to see why, really, considering some of the past winners and snubs which many serious fans can quote verbatim. Still, they tune into the awards ceremony every year, getting excited about their picks winning and hating the bad choices, all the while hating the whole corrupt process.
Few observers, even Academy officials, will debate that the awards are occasionally wrong, that deserving people walk away empty handed and shallow work is awarded, sometimes as little more than a lifetime achievement award. The Oscars aren’t, however, a survey on the best of the medium. They are a celebration of the medium itself, the medium which has been fostered by the major studios who often walk away with the lion’s share of awards.
Now though things may be at risk of changing after the Academy announced a new plan to introduce online voting for next year’s group of nominees, which of course raises concerns about potential hacking and result manipulation. While the Academy will undoubtedly put safety protocols into place to try and prevent such hacking, savvy computer users have repeatedly shown their ability to bring down even the most formidable of networks, something which could very well result in a cavalcade of awards for Sandra Bullock in the very near future.
“The internet is the future and we are always willing to embrace that future in
Hollywood. We are very excited about this new system which will allow Academy voters to register their views from the comfort of their own homes in an immediate fashion,” said an Academy spokesperson. “We are very aware of the threats out there and we want to ensure that our voting process is completely secure. We have contracted companies to ensure that very thing. We believe this new process will be one hundred percent secure and entirely free of hackers and other malicious people.”
The organization didn’t specify what protocols will be put into place, for obvious reasons.
Sandra Bullock won the 2009 Academy Award for her performance in ‘The Blind Side’ which was an extremely popular film.
“This is really a kind of daring thing for Hollywood. Not for anyone else, but for Hollywood. They have been very reticent to step into the internet world and that has resulted in creating a lot of enemies in that realm, which means that a lot of people will be gunning for them, inevitably. That could cause serious problems come Oscar time,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “I mean it’s not really all that important, it is just the Oscars not the Presidential election, but a lot of people do care and a lot of people simply don’t want to see a repeat of 2009, which is a serious concern right now. I mean Bullock only has one movie out this year and it could be someone like Blake Lively which would be much worse, but any risk of her getting more hardware is something to take note of and should be something the Academy takes seriously.”
Bullock has reportedly already started to learn out to use bots in an effort to get herself back on the ticket next year.
