RUPERT GRINT FORCED TO RUN ICE CREAM VAN AS ACTING OPPORTUNITIES FIZZLE
March 4 2012
London, U.K. – There are some roles actors play from which they will never be separated. William Shatner, as an example, will always be Captain Kirk, Samuel L. Jackson will always be, well, Samuel L. Jackson. There is no avoiding such happenings for some actors, surely a curse and a blessing all wrapped in the same package.
For the young actors of the Harry Potter franchise that will be a hard mold to break.
While the success of those films will most certainly get them all much work in the future, getting people to see them in different roles will certainly be a challenge. Already Emma Watson and Harry himself Daniel Radcliffe have tried and largely failed to break that mold and in so doing break the curse that so often destroys the careers of young actors with huge success early on.
For one of those actors it appears, however, that that mold has been broken by going in an entirely new direction completely outside acting. For Rupert Grint the real challenge with the end of Harry Potter hasn’t been new roles but whether or not his ice cream will melt, yes ice cream, which he has taken to selling as a follow up to his film career. While Grint reportedly made millions off his time onscreen, he is now driving an ice cream truck around England, hoping to shed his persona and hopefully make a few extra bucks in the process.
“I keep my van well stocked. It’s got a proper machine that dispenses Mr Whippy ice cream and I buy my lollies wholesale – 50 for a tenner – so I never run short. I’m not allowed to sell my merchandise. I’d need a licence for that,” Grint told the Daily Mail. “I tend to avoid July and August, but the rest of the year I’ll drive around the local villages and if I see some kids looking like they’re in need of ice creams, I’ll pull over and dish them out for free. They’ll say, ‘Ain’t you Ron Weasley?’ And I’ll say, “It’s strange, I get asked that a lot.”
Grint reportedly keeps his resume handy alongside his frozen wares, hoping perhaps to catch the attention of sweet-toothed movie executive.
It’s believed likely that Grint will still end up coked out in a hotel somewhere, perhaps high off his plentiful ice-cream earnings.
“It’s really a shame it has come to this but in many ways it is really smart. Emma Watson isn’t enormously talented but she is very cute and that will last her a long time in the movie industry. Radcliffe is the star, the big name, and some young ladies will certainly have a crush on him and that will serve him well in the short term. Grint though, well he seems nice but that doesn’t translate to movie stardom usually, not by itself,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “I’m sure he could work but he seems satisfied doing what he’s doing. It’s good honest work and a sound way to transition into adulthood, kinda.”
It’s not clear if Grint tries to avoid areas where he might run into former cast mates, but it’s likely.
“I mean he appears reticent to admit that he has spent all his money, which he obviously has, but at least he spent some of it on something he can use for the future. That is smart, much smarter than spending it on hookers and eight balls because those things don’t last,” continued Temple. “Hopefully for him this ice cream business does just well enough to keep him afloat. It would be sad to see pictures of him bloated and naked all over the internet. That would be tough for Potter fans to take I think.”
Tom Felton, who played villain Draco Malfoy in the films, is considered the likeliest candidate to take over for Grint’s presumed fate. Radcliffe reportedly could care less what Grint is selling and hates ice cream anyways.
