SPIDER-MAN ACTORS ALLOWED TO MAKE OWN COSTUMES FOR NEW MOVIE
September 16 2011
Los Angeles, CA – There is no debating the value of superheroes in Hollywood today. Once the spit upon genre, the genre everyone wanted to touch but no one would, superheroes have become massive money makers in the last decade. That, in turn, has made comic fans something of a sought after commodity as studios try their best to make them and mainstream audience happy with the depiction of their favourite comic stars.
That, though, can be a difficult task. Walking the line between fan boys and the mainstream is a challenge even at the best of times, but when it comes to beloved heroes, it can become downright dangerous.
Every detail is scrutinized, every change criticized, and there is little room to move. That happens with story points and even costume design, something which ignited particular passion when the new costume for Spider-Man was revealed, much to the distress of comic fans across the world. Now though it appears that the studio has listened the fans and decided to allow a number of actors on the upcoming film to design their own costumes, in hopes of gaining a more honest and tactile approach to the project.
“I had a green suit on, and then this cardboard head, and these big claws. It was the most fucking insane. Each and every time you see the Lizard, the technology is so
advanced now that when the Lizard's eyes move, they're my eyes. If I frown or show any emotion, they're my emotions. That's how spectacularly advanced technology is,” said Rhys Ifans who plays the Lizard, the main villain in the upcoming movie.
It’s believed that Ifans made his own costume in his trailer, largely of cardboard, duct tape, and a lot of paint.
“In many ways it makes sense to allow the actors to make the costumes themselves. I mean they are playing characters who make their own costumes to begin with, that is the nature of superheroes, so having the actors take on that role could make the performance more genuine,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “That’s of course assuming they make good costumes. There is a big difference between making a that looks good fighting crime, or committing crimes, and what looks good on film. That is going to be a delicate balance but hopefully they’ve nailed it.”
Ifans’ character is a 9 foot lizard; Ifans is a 6-foot Welshmen.
“Things will never, ever, never ever be exactly the way every fan boy wants them to be. That’s just not possible. There are so many possibilities, so many different ideas on what is right and what is wrong that it’s impossible to make everyone happy, but hopefully they will at least recognize earnest effort in these costumes,” continued Temple. “That should earn the filmmakers some credibility and hopefully satisfy a large number of the hardcore fans, who can really make or break these movies. Hope it works out for them.”
Marvel did not comment on the costumes, but reports indicate that they made a major savings in cutting down the makeup and costume departments.
