STEVEN SPIELBERG DID ACTUALLY MAKE THAT MOVIE ABOUT THE HORSE, REALLY
December 24 2011
Hollywood, CA – Steven Spielberg has been easily the most popular and successful filmmaker in history. While only a handful of his movies would be considered amongst the greatest works in the medium, less than many other great talents, the sheer popularity of Spielberg has ensured his legendary status and, arguably, helped make the medium itself a true mainstream art form which in turn has allowed many other films to be made.
In his early days, as often happens with artists, Spielberg was daring. He did things that no one else had ever imagined before and as a result his films, both successful and not, were ambitious and occasionally spectacular.
Few people, even the most dedicated of fans, would argue that Spielberg hasn’t slowed down in recent years. His newer movies, while still entertaining, undoubtedly lack some of the zip and sensation of his older works. His work has remained popular but far from as revolutionary as he once was. There is no better evidence of that than the director’s latest movie ‘War Horse’ which is about, well, a horse. It’s a real movie, one that he actually directed and edited and has now released. Seriously, a movie about a horse.
The movie has gained a reasonably strong critical reception and will undoubtedly be a box office hit, if for no other reason than the fact that it has Spielberg’s name attached. Still, it is a movie about a horse. An action horse, involved in war in some capacity, but still a horse, and it’s over two hours long.
“The movie is good, its fine, and it’s really a tribute to Spielberg’s skill as a filmmaker that he could get you invested in a horse for two hours, but in the end it is still about a horse. If you like horses it’s great, but for everyone else it’s a little sketchy,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “The biggest problem I think is that the horse itself doesn’t really do anything. It’s there, everything kind of keys off the horse, but because it’s a horse you can really only see the world through the people. He’s just there for looks, it’s a kind of horseploitation movie, arguably the first and hopefully the last like that.”
The movie does also star a number of humans, who are really just there to speak for the horse because it does not speak for itself, which would have likely seemed a little ridiculous.
“We have seen speaking animals this year, specifically in the Planet of the Apes movie, but a horse is a different animal and it would have been a little silly to hear him speak because, because it’s a horse. It would have given him more character, but its horse and that would have been silly, well sillier at least,” continued Temple. “I mean no one wants to see a talking horse. It’s been done before and it was silly. This is a different kind of movie though, far more earnest, It takes horses seriously which I guess is a good thing if you care, but...I don’t know. I’m tired of talking about Steven Spielberg’s horse movie. Why did he make a horse movie? So strange.”
The movie also stars a human named Benedict Cumberbatch, seriously.
