CARSON DALY LEFT OUT IN THE COLD AS NBC SHAKES UP LATE NIGHT PROGRAMMING
January 10 2010
New York, NY – The late night television wars have never been this hot before and things are likely to only get warmer as new shake-ups upset the apple cart even further. Not since David Letterman jumped networks after being passed over for ‘The
Tonight Show’ has the late night talk scene had so much turmoil. Now, with big names such as Jay Leno, Conan O’Brien, and Jimmy Fallon all of sudden in the midst of new turmoil some people are being left behind.
With the official announcement that Leno’s primetime show has been cancelled and that he will be returning to 11:30, much of the talk is now turning to what will happen to the remainder of the late night line-up. The lynch pin is of course O’Brien who took over hosting duties for ‘The Tonight Show’ last year. His decision whether to leave; to jump to another network; or to have his show pushed back, will one way or another change the lives of a great many people. Amongst all the talk of those heavy hitters though

one player, Carson Daly, has been left out of the discussion. Daly’s show, ‘Later’ airs directly after Fallon’s show at 1:35 and its fate is now just as much up in the air as anyone else’s.
“I’m just kind of playing the waiting game like everyone else. I’ve tried to get some more information but no one has been returning my calls. I followed Jimmy up to the offices where he let me in and we listened at one of the executive’s door but we couldn’t really hear anything. I don’t know, I think I’ll just keep checking out websites like everyone else,” said Daly. “I mean I want to know of course but there’s only so much that I can do. I’ve sent a couple emails and text messages but no one has responded so far but I guess we will see. I’m going to try and get in touch with Conan soon, as soon I can get his number.”
Daly addressed his situation on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ on Friday though few people saw that appearance.
“No matter what happens it’s going to change the landscape dramatically. There are so many options and so many variables that inevitably a lot of lives are going to be changed one way or the other. It’s a shame for everyone that things didn’t work out the way they had hoped they would but sometimes you roll the dice and you come up snake eyes,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “NBC tried something new, something they really had to do, and it hasn’t worked at all. There are lots of reasons for that failure but, ultimately, what matters is the failure not the recriminations. They will learn a lot from this failure but right now they just need to do what they can to get things right.”
Daly has hosted the show since 2002. His biggest success remains his time on MTV.
“Daly is really the odd man out here. Fallon has been disappointing but his show is venerated and will remain no matter what happens. For Daly though things are a little different and that could mean a tough road ahead for him and his show,” continued Daly. “It’s important though that he remains in the discussion. His contribution might not be as significant as Leno or O’Brien but he still adds something to the medium and to the network. While it’s unlikely that his twenty or thirty viewers will break the network if they were to suddenly leave, in this era of declining ratings they could feel the pain later on.”
Daly for his part has been trying to pursue other opportunities but has thus far received no replies to his phone calls.
