GABRIEL BYRNE OPENS UP ABOUT CHILDHOOD SEX ABUSE ASSUMING SOMEONE WILL CARE

January 19 2010

Dublin, Ireland – There was a period, a very brief period, when Gabriel Byrne was a star. Appearing in films such as ‘Miller’s Crossing’, ‘Point of no Return’, ‘Little Women’, and the much loved ‘The Usual Suspects’ the early 1990’s were boom times for Byrne. gabriel byrne
Alongside countryman Liam Neeson, Byrne rode the wave of Irish love that so dominated the early part of that decade, only to ultimately be left behind by the very thing that made him a star.

A succession of increasingly obscure roles in obscure movies with only the occasional big picture to remind the movie-going public that he was indeed still alive, Byrne has fallen far from those previous heights. Even his role in the HBO show ‘In Treatment’ has done much to restore the lustre to Byrne’s star with so few people even remotely interested. It is in the midst of that indifference that the actor has revealed that he was sexually abused as a child. While the story is no doubt sad the fact that it is coming so late in his career and so far past the point when anyone cared about the man himself it’s seen as very unlikely that the revelations will do anything to boost his sagging fortunes.creepy priest

“Unfortunately, I experienced some sexual abuse. It was a known and admitted fact of life amongst us that there was this particular man, and you didn't want to be left in the dressing room with him. It took many years to come to terms with it and to forgive those incidents that I felt had deeply hurt me,” Byrne told Irish broadcaster Gay Byrne. “Again, I didn't think it severely impacted me at the time. But when I think about my later life, and how I had difficulties with certain issues, there is the real possibility they could have been attributable to that.”

It’s not exactly why the actor, who turns 60 in May, chose this time to reveal this deep dark secret from his past or who in the general public might be interested in his tale of woe. It should be noted that fellow cable programs ‘Big Love’ and ‘Dexter’ won multiple awards at last Sunday’s Golden Globes awards ceremony and ‘In Treatment’ had no nominations.gabriel byrne

“It’s funny that Byrne has come out and made these revelations given the nature of his show. Obviously his as a psychologist has inspired him to do some personal soul searching and then unleash that on the general public for no apparent reason. If he were speaking on behalf of victims or doing some kind of advocacy it would make sense, but this just doesn’t,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “He only has one upcoming role in a movie that will be very small no matter what. One has to think that perhaps it’s related to his HBO show. I mean the two things do sort of naturally blend together so perhaps he’s looking to achieve some kind of synergy that could lead him to the red carpet next year. Either that or he's trying to latch onto the sex abuse-priest thing that is also kind of past it's prime.”the boys of st vincent

Byrne’s next film is ‘At Swim-Two-Birds’ which will likely only be seen by family members of the cast and crew.

“People today don’t realize how big he really was in the early part of that decade. Only people who were movie buffs at the time really remember that he seemed to be everywhere with that sexy brogue. He was kind of the Burt Reynolds of his generation ,” continued Temple. “The real issue for Byrne is not sexual abuse or ratings, it’s whether or not anyone is paying attention o what he is saying and if those few who are really care what he has to say. That will be the only way that this revelation will do anything for his career, or for anything, for any reason. So odd.”

It’s rumoured that fellow 90’s star Chazz Palminteri, who also appeared alongside Byrne in ‘The Usual Suspects’, has some upcoming revelation that no one will care about.
