GARY COLEMAN RELEASED AFTER SMALL SCUFFLE
January 25 2010
Salt Lake City, UT – When ten-year old Gary Coleman first showed up for an audition for a little show called ‘Diff'rent Strokes’ it’s very likely that he had no idea of the life it would afford him. By the end of the eight year run of the show, Coleman
would be a pop culture icon, both the butt of jokes and a role model for smaller stature people all over the world. His life since the end of the show has been a mixed bag with financial and health difficulties and an inability to break his now less than endearing public image.
Coleman though has lived a much more docile life when compared to his ‘Diff'rent Strokes’ co-stars Todd Bridges and Dana Plato who count multiple arrests, drug abuse, and early death amongst their many post-show achievements. Now though Coleman has been arrested, and released, from an incident involving domestic violence late on Sunday. Though authorities found no evidence of any wrong-doing at the Coleman household, the pint-sized star was arrested nonetheless on an outstanding warrant dating from 2006. Early Monday Coleman posted bond and was released. Coleman’s representatives, when contacted for comment stated that it was a small incident that likely wouldn’t grow much beyond its current status.
“Unfortunately incidents like this are par for the course not only with former cats members of that show but pretty much every child star of the era. The same type of things simply don’t seem to happen nearly as often anymore and child stars of today reach much greater heights than people like Coleman ever did. It’s really a shame that the curse of this show has come back to haunt him yet again,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “Luckily it was such a small incident that it won’t have long term negative effects on the guy. He’s been through enough in life, both with the body he was given and with the tragedy that has surrounded him that the last thing he needs is a prison sentence, even if it is a short one.”
Coleman apparently feasted on hot dogs, chilli, and steamed vegetables while in prison Sunday night.
“Coleman has, for whatever reason, simply not been able to get his life back on track. Part of the problem for him, no doubt, is his appearance. He is one of the most famous people in the United States and for many other reasons is very memorable and that must make it difficult for him to get regular employment, even for abbreviated employment,” continued Temple. “I mean it’s really easy to make short jokes here, but the these brief moments of tragedy that he keeps enduring really make the entire situation sad, not really the type of environment for jokes. At one time those jokes were funny but with the way this has just gone on and one it stops being quite so funny.”
At 4’8”, Coleman is quite short.
“Even with such a skimpy time in jail, we are reminded so much of his co-stars and the tragedies that their lives have been. Todd Bridges has done well of late, apparently, but no one has heard from Dana Plato in years and she was the one that was really at risk,” continued Temple. “Hopefully this whole incident will be brief and compact, the last thing he or anyone needs is a protracted legal battle that would end up just short-shifting everyone involved.”
Coleman’s representatives promised a short statement later in the week.
