JOHN GOODMAN NO LONGER ABLE TO FIT ON FILM SCREENS
January 26 2010
Pacific Palisades, CA – John Goodman has made a career out of playing the gruff yet lovable everyman on both television and film. His first big break was of course as the working man archetype on the hit show ‘Roseanne’. The success of that show and the

natural affable nature that Goodman showcased in the role of Dan Connor landed him a succession of roles in films as diverse as ‘King Ralph’, ‘The Babe’, and ‘The big Lebowski’, ensuring him a healthy career and a prosperous life.
Goodman is, of course, also a very large man. A product of that prosperous life no doubt, his size has also helped to define his on-screen persona, only adding to the natural magnetism he already possessed. Unfortunately it is that size, the source of much his persona, that has apparently put an end to Goodman’s career. His issues are not apparently health related though but rather a result of the sheer size that the actor no possesses making it difficult if not impossible to fit him on screen with other
actors. Though the actor does have upcoming projects his role has, according to reports, severely diminished when it was found that other performers were unable to fit in the picture frame, meaning that Goodman’s years on the silver screen are likely numbered.
“Everyone on the movie really liked John. He was nice to everyone, professional, and he’s still got the acting chops but it was really just a spacing issue. Everyone wanted him in the film but it was very clear from the first day on set that it just wasn’t going to work and so they had to rewrite his role and reduce the time the character was on screen,” said a source from Goodman’s latest film ‘Die Päpstin’. “I don’t see how things are going to change. I saw him at the supermarket the other day and he’s a lot bigger than he was then, knocking over stuff every time he turned. Eventually they just let him wait in the warehouse while his wife kept shopping.”
Goodman has been performing voices in a number of projects recently, presumably from some vast building capable of holding him and sound equipment.
“It’s really a shame that it’s come to this but weight loss can be a very tricky thing. In a case like this, where his size is a part of his persona, it’s even more difficult. He has to maintain a certain weight and girth to keep getting roles, but at that size it’s difficult to not just gain more weight,” said Scrape TV Health analyst Rebecca Phelps. “Part of the problem is simply body perception. One starts to lose perspective after a while when you are dealing with something on that scale. There’s also the very real difficulty in finding scales that can accommodate you as well as really knowing what you are eating. Things just end up in your hand and then in your stomach, only adding to problem.”
With the growing popularity of IMAX, it’s believed that Goodman may one day soon be able to fit on screen with groups of regular sized people.
“Goodman is really at a crossroads here and with his advancing age it might be that he is simply uninterested in appearing in many movies in the future. I’m financially he is very secure so it might be that he is willing to just live out the rest of his days in a large storage facility or an open field somewhere,” continued Phelps. “I mean I am no film expert by any stretch of the imagination but I can guess that it’s very difficult to create drama effectively with only one person on-screen at once. It’s unfortunate that it has come this, especially for fans that held out hope of seeing part of Goodman again in the future.”
Goodman’s former co-star, Roseanne, has also suffered a similar fate not appearing onscreen since 2006.
