OVER THE TOP REMAKE TO COMPETE WITH SLEW OF ARM WRESTLING MOVIES
January 9 2010
Hollywood, CA – The 1980’s were a long time ago, now twenty years gone, but it isn’t just the calendar that shows us how much time has passed. Culture today is markedly different than it was in the 80’s, a decade that in scope of everything that
happened throughout the 20th century still seems oddly out of place. Big stars such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Kevin Costner, Meg Ryan, Harrison Ford, and Kathleen Turner dominated that decade but now either don’t work, have become parodies of their former selves, or become Governor. The 80’s were a long time ago indeed.
People haven’t forgotten that decade though as much of modern culture will attest. Big screen versions of ‘Transformers’, ‘G.I. Joe’, and the upcoming ‘A-Team’ prove that the unique cultural expressions of the decade still have relevance today. Now another touchstone of that decade appears to be making its way into the modern world as a Sylvester Stallone’s epic ‘Over the Top becomes the next movie to get the remake treatment. The story of a truck driver struggling to take care of his terminally ill wife and rebellious son and ultimately find redemption in a nation-wide arm wrestling competition won’t be without its own struggles as at least two other arm wrestling films try to compete for the same box office dollars.
“We are thrilled to be bringing this classic back to the big screen for a new audience to enjoy, some for the first time. The story of Lincoln Hawk is, we believe, just as relevant today as it ever has been, perhaps even more considering the financial difficulties many truckers have been enduring in recent years,” said a spokesperson for Warner Brothers which will producing the film. “There is no better comment for overcoming hard times than ‘Over the Top’ and we believe that this film will strike a chord with everyone, whether they are arm wrestling fans or not. As for Sylvester Stallone, well let’s just say there will be more than a few surprises in the movie so keep your eye out.”
Tentatively scheduled for release in early 2012, which will also mark the 25th anniversary of the original film, competition has already sprung up in the form of at least two similar movies competing for the ever elusive arm wrestling dollars.
“There are two similar films in active production right now, one at Fox and the other at

Lionsgate. From what I’ve heard there are also a few other scripts rolling around the city as well which are getting a lot of buzz and may make it into production as well. One has to wonder how many arm wrestling movies that market will bear,” said an anonymous Hollywood insider. “These things happen every now and then, similar movie being made at the same time, but it’s rare and frequently financially detrimental for everyone involved. ‘Over the Top’ has the name brand but from what I’ve been hearing the script is a little soft compared to the other two and may end up just looking old, but I guess we will see.”
Robert Loggia had reportedly been pushing a sequel to the film for many years but it’s not clear if he will appear in the remake due to his advanced age. Stallone is apparently a lock for a cameo with names such as Channing Tatum and Chris Hemsworth being talked about as stars.
“This is the best news the sport has had in a long time. ‘Over the Top’ is a touchstone for all arm wrestlers despite its rather gross inaccuracies. Hopefully they will get those details right this time around though and help to inspire a whole new generation,” said a spokesperson for the New York Arm Wrestling Association. “I don’t image that any of the other movies will be able to compete but we will see. I’m not really a movie critic so I can’t say, all I know is that all these movies coming out is nothing but good for our sport.”
It’s not clear if Stallone, who co-wrote the original film, will be contributing to the new film’s storyline.
