WILD HOGS MUSICAL TO HIT BROADWAY NEXT YEAR

January 9 2010

Hollywood, CA – The worlds of theatre and film have often collided despite very fundamental differences in their respective audiences. Frequently performers and creative personnel from one field will test the waters in the other. Projects too cross the producers musical
the barrier often, take ‘Hairspray’ as an example, which was a movie based on a musical which was based on a movie. Despite protestations, particularly from the theatre crowd, the two mediums have been intrinsically interlinked and will likely remain so as long as both mediums remain viable.

The success of ‘Hairspray’ as well as other successful movie adaptations such as ‘The Lion King’ and ‘Evil Dead’ has prompted many studios to look at Broadway as a new avenue to exploit. While some have been spectacular failures, such as the musical version of Stephen King’s ‘Carrie’, others have been such huge successes that studios have put millions into the productions.  Julie Taymor’s adaptation of ‘Spider Man’ which begins previews in February, is one example of how big the medium has become. Now a new film has begun its move to Broadway, the 2007 smash ‘Wild Hogs’. Already slated for March of 2011 show producers are now deep into production and hoping to lure the film’s stars to the stage.wild hogs poster

“We are thrilled to be joining the incredible lineage that is the Broadway community. We feel that our production is a perfect for the community and for the history of not only this stage, but all stage productions. The Wild Hogs model will fit very nicely, we believe, amongst all the other heavy hitters Broadway has seen,” read a statement from Touchstone which produced the film. “While we understand that anticipation about the nature of the production will be high, for the time being we will be keeping details secret. Be assured though that this will not be your typical stage production and we intend on breaking the mould just as much as the Hogs did in the film.”

It’s believed the musical will be based primarily on the first film with elements taken from the script for the sequel which was just recently delayed indefinitely. john travolta hairspray

“It’s a very interesting notion to take this particular movie and make it into a musical. Obviously they are exploring a whole new target audience that previous musicals have largely ignored. It’s very unlikely that hipsters, young girls, older women, or gay men are going to be flocking to a musical based on a bunch of middle aged men driving motorbikes across the country. It’s just not the target audience so they are trying something new,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “There are some cult projects that have done well, like Hairspray or The Producers, but generally adaptations that have done well are mainstream and not aimed at middle aged men, who frankly are not the core audience of musical attendees, at least on Broadway.”

Outside John Travolta the film’s stars are doing little in terms of film work which may allow them the opportunity to perform the roles themselves.

“Snagging the stars would go a long way towards securing success for the project, at wild hogs
least in the short term. Travolta in particular is important as he is not only a big draw, he is also experienced in musical work including the film version of the stage version of Hairspray. His inclusion would go a long to ensuring success,” continued Temple. “Of course you have to wonder whether or not this is simply a move towards furthering the franchise. They became skittish obviously on making another movie but perhaps if this is a success they will feel more confidence in moving forward on that project. Or perhaps they will make a film version of the musical and just reboot it entirely.”

Academy Award winner Marisa Tomei for one will not be appearing in the stage version, citing other things to do. Ray Liotta, the villain of the film, has nothing better to do.
